When Love Ruins a Life
And you grow up realizing your mother’s mistake became your burden.
Some women mistake chaos for passion. They call it love — the kind that burns, breaks, and demands to be forgiven every day.
My mother did.
She chose a man who couldn’t hold a job because he “hated being told what to do.” A man whose pride outweighed his paycheck. A man who could raise his voice faster than he could raise a family.
And because she called that love, we called it life.
We watched her choose him again and again — over reason, over comfort, over us. And when you grow up in that kind of home, something in you starts to rot quietly. You learn that “love” means enduring humiliation. That “family” means surviving another argument. That being good means staying quiet.
Sometimes I wonder — if she had chosen better, would I have turned out softer? Happier? Less afraid of peace?
Respect fades when you finally see it clearly: you were never meant to inherit trauma this way. You were just a child caught between a woman’s illusions and a man’s failures.
And yet, the hatred is complicated. Because you love her. Because you understand that she loved him the way no one ever loved her — desperately, foolishly, to her own undoing.
Still, you wish she hadn’t. You wish she’d chosen us.
It’s a special kind of grief — hating your mother not for what she did to you, but for what she did to herself.
