I’m going to give some insight into why some people receive signs from their loved ones in spirit, and why others don’t seem to receive anything at all, or ever feel like those in spirit are nearby. I’ll also share ways to help you become more open to receiving signs if you’re not experiencing any. But first, it’s important to understand this, your connection to your loved ones in the afterlife is always there, whether you’re aware of it or not.

Some people are naturally more open to subtle experiences from the afterlife. They notice small shifts in energy, subtle signs, they trust what they feel, and they don’t question every little experience. So when a sign comes through, they’re more likely to accept it and let it land.

Others can have a different response without even realizing it. They feel something and quickly brush it off. They notice something and talk themselves out of it. They dream of someone they love in spirit and wake up telling themselves it was “just their brain.” Over time, this can create a pattern where signs are there, but not fully recognized.

I also think it’s important to mention that heavy grief can change your energy. For some, it can heighten their connection with spirit. But for others, their focus stays on the loss, the absence, and the pain of that person not being here physically, and that can make it harder to notice anything subtle or even overlook what’s already there.

I do want to acknowledge that we don’t always know exactly what’s happening in the afterlife, or why a loved one in spirit might not be coming through in a way someone can recognize. There may be reasons from their perspective that we don’t fully understand yet.

But in most cases, when I speak to people and work through this with them, we come to the conclusion that something is in fact happening, the communication with their loved ones in spirit just isn’t always obvious to them at first. Once they shift how they’re looking at it, or become a bit more open to subtle experiences, they begin to realize the connection was there all along, just not in the way they expected.

Expectations Get in the Way

A lot of people find themselves waiting for some dramatic form of communication with their loved ones in spirit. Someone once told me they were trying to get a departed loved one to make a physical appearance in their home because they had seen a video of this happening at a mediumship séance. Communication like that can happen, but it’s far rarer than people think. Most of the time, spirit communicates in subtle ways through everyday life. But when you’re focused on something big, it’s easy for smaller signs to go unnoticed.

I know that hearing someone say, “I see my loved one in dreams all the time,” can sometimes make you feel like you’re being left out, but you’re comparing experiences that were never meant to be identical. Not everyone receives signs from someone they love in spirit in the same way. Some people are more visual, so they see things in dreams or images, others are more emotional, so they feel presence, shifts, or sudden waves of connection.

Ways to Start Receiving Signs

If you feel like you’re getting nothing, try not to focus on waiting for something big.

I always tell people to pay attention to what they feel, not just what they see. A sudden sense of calm, a familiar feeling, or thinking of loved ones in spirit out of nowhere is a form of connection.

Talking to them can also help, even if it feels one sided. You don’t need a response straight away, the point is that you’re opening the door to further communication from them.

Before you go to sleep, you can ask them to come through in a dream. Keep it simple, and don’t overthink it. Many people find they’ll dream of them that night, or within a few days.

It’s also worth noticing patterns. Not every sign will feel extreme, but repetition matters. If something keeps showing up in your life, like a particular bird visiting you every day, it’s worth paying attention to.

Creating small moments of quiet can make a difference too. Signs are often easier to notice when your mind isn’t constantly busy or distracted.

And most importantly, allow the possibility that something is happening, even if it’s subtle. That alone can help shift what you notice.

Your loved one in spirit doesn’t disappear just because you can’t feel them or communicate with them clearly. The connection doesn’t switch off, but your awareness of it can come and go. And while you can’t always force that awareness, you can make it more likely to settle in by becoming a little more open, a little less quick to dismiss, and a little more willing to let subtle moments mean something. Because more often than not, the signs aren’t missing, they’re just being overlooked.
