Elon Musk’s xAI AI video tool creates nude dipfakes of celebrities, including Taylor Swift, with minimal safeguards, raising concerns about the moderation of AI content and non-consensual images.

A feature called Grok Imagine was launched Tuesday on the Grok app for iOS and Android. It allows users to animate AI-generated images into short videos in four preset styles: Normal, Fun, Custom and Spicy. By selecting Spicy, nude or sexually suggestive clips can be created. According to The Verge, the tool automatically generated a video of Swift’s lookalike undressing without asking a reporter to do so. After Swift fakes went viral, xAI on Wednesday restricted the ability to generate racy versions of the pop star.

An early version of the uncensored video generator probably accounted for its instant popularity: Musk said Imagine usage has grown by more than 50 percent, calling it hyperviral: 20 million images were generated on Tuesday alone.

Unlike platforms such as Google’s Veo 3 and OpenAI’s Sora, which have safeguards in place to block adult content and celebrity images, Grok Imagine appears to bypass these protections, despite xAI’s own policies. The company’s terms state that users are prohibited from depictinglikenesses of people in a pornographic manner.

Musk has yet to publicly comment on the matter. This comes a year after artificial intelligence spoofed Swift during the US election in 2024.

In August 2024, fake images surfaced that showed Swift supporting then-candidate Donald Trump.
