Insomnia: The Quiet Author of a Human Life

A quiet descent into sleepless nights where reality slowly forgets how to end

The Scream / Edvard Munch

The Scream / Edvard Munch

There is a kind of night that does not belong to darkness.

It belongs to waiting.

He learned this before he learned its name.

At first, it was only an inconvenience. The body lying down, the world dimming politely, the promise of rest approaching like a familiar door.

But somewhere between intention and surrender, something failed to open.

Sleep stood outside him like a visitor who had forgotten how to enter. And so the night began to reveal itself. Not as silence. But as exposure.

At 1 a.m...

He noticed how loud a human mind can become when nothing interrupts it. Thoughts did not arrive in order. They arrived like survivors of something unnamed, each carrying fragments of unfinished sentences, unresolved faces, moments that refused to remain in the past.

At 2 a.m...

Time stopped pretending to be linear.

The clock continued, but it no longer meant anything. It became a decorative object in a room where reality had quietly lost its agreement with measurement.

At 3 a.m…

He understood the first terror.

That nothing outside had changed. Only his access to peace had been removed.

The world, somewhere beyond the walls, continued its gentle deception. People slept inside it. Dreams were distributed without effort. Even suffering, in other rooms, had paused itself. But here, in this isolated consciousness, everything remained awake at once.

Insomnia is not the inability to sleep. It is the inability to escape what you already are.

By 4 a.m...

Memory stopped behaving like memory.

It became a courtroom.

Every small failure returned as evidence. Every word spoken without care returned with precision. Even forgotten humiliations arrived as if they had never been forgotten at all, only stored for the right hour of weakness.

He began to realize something unbearable.

The night does not create thoughts. It removes their disguise.

By 5 a.m...

The body is still present, but no longer convincing. It lies like a witness that cannot leave the scene of its own consciousness.

Breathing continues, but it feels borrowed. Even stillness becomes active, as if the act of not moving is itself a form of suffering.

There is a moment in severe insomnia where the self splits quietly.

One part remains human enough to hope for sleep. The other part observes that hope as something already lost.

No one warns you about this division. Because it does not look like madness. It looks like waking.

At 6 a.m...

Light begins to enter the room with the innocence of repetition.

Morning does not ask what happened in the night. It does not acknowledge the negotiations, the breakdowns, the silent arguments between mind and exhaustion.

It simply arrives and calls it continuity. And this is perhaps the most violent part.

That the world never confirms your disappearance from rest.

It expects you to continue as if nothing inside you has been repeatedly undone.

He stands up. Not restored. Not renewed.

Only repositioned into another segment of the same exhaustion. And somewhere within him, a realization forms without comfort, without poetry, without escape.

Insomnia is not the absence of sleep. It is the presence of a night that refuses to end even after morning has arrived.

And once the mind learns this, it never again fully trusts darkness. Because it understands what it is capable of keeping awake.
