Why Confusion Makes You Scratch Your Head

When the brain runs into difficulty, tension starts to build. Sooner or later, that tension needs a physical outlet. But if the decision-making circuits are blocked — for example, when you’re trying to solve a problem without having enough information — that excess energy doesn’t just disappear. Instead, it tends to get rerouted into a neutral motor channel, often something ancient and deeply ingrained, like grooming.

That’s why so many primates—including us—instinctively end up scratching their heads, touching their faces, fixing their hair, and so on. It’s essentially an out-of-context action that helps prevent the system from overloading.

Anyone who has spent time around very young children has probably noticed this kind of behavior. Their nervous system is still developing, and it often relies on similar strategies to deal with emotional or informational overload. At its core, this is self-regulation — a form of what is commonly called stimming.

What’s happening under the hood is fairly interesting. Movements like scratching, touching, rocking, or stretching can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps reduce stress by lowering heart rate and even decreasing cortisol levels in the blood. In that sense, these behaviors act as built-in self-soothing mechanisms—something evolution “came up with” long before humans invented their own coping tools like alcohol, cigarettes, religion, or hobbies.

Now, to be precise, saying that evolution “came up with” this would be a bit misleading. Evolution doesn’t design or plan anything. What we’re describing here is technically a displacement activity, and it doesn’t occur in order to reduce overload, but rather because of it. When the system gets jammed, signals can spill over into unrelated motor pathways — which makes this behavior look purposeful, even though it isn’t. It’s less a feature designed for our benefit and more like a quirk—or even a small bug—in how neural signals are routed.

That also means these behaviors don’t exist because they are inherently useful in some grand, pre-planned sense. There’s nothing intrinsically “advantageous” about scratching your head per se. Traits like this simply persist as side effects of how biological systems work. In this specific case, for example, stimulating skin mechanoreceptors — especially C-tactile fibers — can incidentally activate the nucleus of the solitary tract and, through it, the vagus nerve, leading to effects like a reduced heart rate.

And yet, here’s the interesting part: even if this mechanism wasn’t “designed” to help, it still ends up doing something useful. Our ancestors who, when faced with a problem, slipped into this kind of motor short circuit — scratching their heads instead of panicking, freezing, or doing something reckless — likely experienced small calming effects from endorphins and oxytocin release. Over time, that may have made them just a bit more resilient, a bit more likely to recover, survive, and reproduce.

Which is probably why that same gesture is still here today.
