Rethinking Fashion: Environmental Impacts and the Path to SDG 12 and SDG 13

Have you ever wondered how profound the impact of the fashion industry is on the planet we live on?

Today, fashion trends evolve rapidly, with new designs each season featuring appealing colors and comfortable fabrics. The rise of affordable, easily accessible clothing, both in stores and online, has fueled fast fashion, where purchases are driven more by low prices and fleeting trends than necessity.

Beneath the surface of fast fashion lies a troubling reality. The fashion industry is among the most resource-intensive and environmentally destructive sectors, largely due to fast fashion (Luis et al., 2025). Mass clothing production generates vast textile waste, enormous water consumption, and significant carbon emissions. Every cheap, trendy garment carries an environmental cost that often goes unnoticed.

Fast fashion is currently valued at $150.82 billion, up 10.74% since 2024, and projected to reach $291.1 billion by 2032, with a CAGR of 10.7% (UniformMarket, 2025). Despite growing awareness of sustainable fashion, most consumers remain reluctant to abandon fast fashion. This global growth shapes consumer habits while exerting immense environmental pressure on production countries. Vietnam, for example, has become a key link in the fast fashion supply chain due to low labor costs (Dung et al., 2024). While the industry boosts Vietnam’s economy, it also causes water pollution from dyeing, high energy use, and industrial waste accumulation, illustrating how global consumption patterns directly affect local sustainability.

The fast fashion model directly challenges SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, which emphasizes efficient use of natural resources, reducing waste through prevention, recycling, and reuse, and promoting sustainable consumption patterns. Overproduction, disposable trends, and short product lifespans make it difficult to achieve SDG 12. Simultaneously, the industry’s carbon-intensive processes, energy use, and reliance on synthetic fibers exacerbate greenhouse gas emissions, obstructing SDG 13 Climate Action, which calls for urgent measures to combat climate change. Pollution from microplastics and industrial emissions further threatens ecosystems and climate resilience.

To align with SDG 12 and 13, both brands and consumers must act. Brands should adopt ethical production, minimize overproduction, and use recycled or eco-friendly materials. Consumers can reduce environmental impact by choosing quality over quantity, supporting responsible brands, and extending clothing lifespans through reuse, repair, and recycling. Every conscious decision contributes to sustainable consumption, production, and climate action.

Fashion has always reflected creativity and identity, but now it must also reflect responsibility. True style should not cost the Earth. Fashion should be redefined not only by appearance but by the care we show for the world that sustains us.
