Field recording + memory note from Bodhgaya, India (2011)

FIELD NOTE | Bodhgaya, India (October 2011)

[embed]

I recorded this fragment late at night to capture the specific stillness of the Diwali festival. I invite you to press play above ↑ and listen to the stillness before reading.

This is a field recording and memory note from Bodhgaya, India during Diwali in October 2011.

I remember the sky being a deep, saturated purple — a hue I’ve never quite seen back home in Japan. It was late at night during the Diwali festival. In Bodhgaya, the energy of the day doesn’t so much disappear as it does retreat into the distance.

This is a recording of that “retreat.” It is a quiet night, but if you listen closely, you can hear the faint, percussive outbursts of drums from miles away, drifting through the air like a pulse. It’s the sound of a festival happening elsewhere, leaving this specific corner of the night in a state of heavy, expectant stillness.
