the country club taught me what i actually wanted to buy | musing no. 124

it wasn’t the membership. it was never the membership.

i drove past a country club today.

and something flashed.

my early 30s.

paying dues to belong to a place

that could tell other people i’d made it.

i don’t miss that version of me.

i mostly feel sorry for him.

i’m glad he’s still back there.

where i left him.

what i never clocked at the time —

i wasn’t paying for golf.

i wasn’t paying for tennis.

i was paying to be seen at a certain altitude.

surrounded by people doing the same thing.

chasing a look.

not a life.

i’ve owned expensive things.

and i learned something nobody warns you about —

the thing doesn’t stay a thing.

eventually it becomes evidence.

evidence that you’re successful.

evidence that you’re enough.

evidence that you still belong.

and once something becomes evidence,

losing it doesn’t feel expensive.

it feels threatening.

your identity fuses to it.

you become the watch. the car. the club membership.

so wanting the newer one

stops being a preference.

it starts feeling like survival.

then i stopped chasing.

and something quieter showed up.

not less.

quieter.

freedom doesn’t announce itself.

it doesn’t signal to a room.

it just sits there, undemanding.

and that’s the part that’s addicting —

not the acquiring.

the quiet.

if you’re somewhere between chasing and quiet —

that’s exactly what this page is for.

get red room no. 62

i was talking to my kids about private jets.

and i told them —

it was never about having the money for one.

that’s not what it buys you.

it buys you time.

the freedom to go anywhere

without losing a day of your life to get there.

that’s what wealth is really buying.

not status.

time.

some people at that club loved the game.

genuinely. that’s real, and it’s fine.

but most of us weren’t there for the sport.

we were there because every time life cracked,

we needed something to remind us we still mattered.

that’s not a club.

that’s a rat race with a dress code.

here’s what scares me more, looking back —

people who are always chasing never get to enough.

there is no finish line.

there’s only the next fix. the next level.

the next thing that promises relief.

eventually they stop asking whether they even wanted

the thing they’re chasing.

because the chase becomes the identity.

and when someone needs the next level bad enough,

they stop asking who gets stepped on to get there.

they’ll use you.

lie to you.

burn you down a little if it gets them closer to the fix.

not because they’re evil.

because the chase doesn’t leave room

for anyone else’s floor to matter.

so ask yourself —

is that really who you want your life filled with?

this is the whole reason earned exists —

the doctrine for building a life that doesn’t need an audience.

get the book → earned

i see it now.

i wish i’d seen it sooner.

if i joined anything today —

it wouldn’t be a club that measured success

by who noticed me.

it’d be a room full of people

trying to become the kind who wouldn’t need one.

nothing to prove.

nowhere to arrive.

just the work of staying honest.
