The LSAT Contrapositive: A Two-Step Method That Resolves Most Conditional Logic Errors

Most LSAT test-takers learn that conditional statements matter. Fewer actually learn how to handle them under pressure without making the two errors that wrong answers are specifically built to exploit.

The contrapositive is the fix. Once you have a clean method, conditional questions — whether they appear in Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, or a parallel-flaw question — stop being coin flips.

What the contrapositive actually is

Every conditional statement has a logically equivalent partner. “If A, then B” and “If not-B, then not-A” carry the same information in opposite directions. Both are either true or false together. That second statement is the contrapositive, and knowing it gives you a second valid inference route from any conditional — which is often exactly what an LSAT inference or assumption question is asking for.

The two-step process

Forming a contrapositive correctly requires two operations in the right order: negate both terms, then reverse them. The sequence matters.

Take: “If someone passed the bar exam, they are licensed to practice.”

Original: Passed Bar → Licensed

Contrapositive: Not-Licensed → Not-Passed ✓

That is the contrapositive. It is guaranteed by the original. Only that.

The two moves the LSAT waits for you to get wrong

There are exactly two ways to mishandle a conditional, and the LSAT builds trap answers around both.

The converse: you reverse without negating. From “Passed Bar → Licensed” you conclude “Licensed → Passed Bar.” Invalid. A licensed plumber did not pass any bar exam. The LSAT labels this a mistaken reversal.

The inverse: you negate without reversing. From “Passed Bar → Licensed” you conclude “Not-Passed → Not-Licensed.” Also invalid — many licensed professionals never took a bar exam. The LSAT calls this a mistaken negation.

Both errors come from treating a sufficient condition as a necessary one, or vice versa. Once you can name these moves, you will see them explicitly in flaw question answer choices.

When the terms are compound

The rule gets more precise when a conditional contains “and” or “or.” Negating a compound term follows a simple principle:

“Not (A and B)” becomes “not-A or not-B” — at least one of them fails.

“Not (A or B)” becomes “not-A and not-B” — both fail.

Example: “If a candidate submits the application and completes the interview, they receive an offer.”

Original: (Submit AND Interview) → Offer

Contrapositive: Not-Offer → (Not-Submit OR Not-Interview)

This means if someone did not get an offer, at least one requirement was not met — not necessarily both. That single-word difference changes which answer choice is correct.

Chaining conditionals

When multiple conditionals link together — A → B → C — the contrapositive of the full chain is Not-C → Not-B → Not-A. Both the forward chain and the reverse-negated chain are valid. Everything else needs independent support.

LSAT questions frequently give you a chain, then ask what can be concluded if a particular element is absent. That is a signal to work backward using contrapositives. Map the chain in both directions before reading the answer choices.

A quick practice rep

Statement: “Only certified instructors may lead the workshop.”

“Only if” signals a necessary condition — being certified is required to lead.

Original: Lead Workshop → Certified Instructor

Contrapositive: Not Certified → Not Lead Workshop

The converse (Certified → Lead) is not valid. A certified instructor might not lead anything.

How to use this under time pressure

During practice, write out every contrapositive until forming one takes two seconds. That investment is front-loaded; the speed comes with repetition. On test day, the moment a stimulus introduces a conditional — “if,” “only if,” “unless,” “all,” “whenever” — write the original and its contrapositive before moving to the question stem.

That 10-second habit protects you across inference, assumption, flaw, and parallel-reasoning questions. It also makes the wrong answers easier to eliminate, because you can name exactly what error they commit.
