I’m Hot Enough Without Chili

June 9: Are you a sambal, piri-piri, or Tabasco person? Do you like spicy food, or do you prefer to keep it plain and simple? (Do Capozucca)

I’ve never been to an Indian restaurant where I haven’t loved the food. So saying, I’ve never been to India. The restaurants and street food are probably different. And totally different in different areas of the sub-continent. I’ve eaten at a South Indian restaurant where the food is vegetarian and delicious, I’ve eaten at upmarket Indian restaurants, I’ve eaten at Indian restaurants in London, Wales, and Tasmania, all of which were positively scrumptious.

In the above photo, I’m eating at a little Baba-Ma place across the other side of town. Let me tell you, it’s worth the drive. The meals are cheap and the service is exceptional. Wherever I eat Indian food, I must order Naan — garlic naan or cheese naan to share. And I must finish with pistachio kulfi.

And what I have in between the naan and kulfi can be anything: lamb, pork, chicken, beef, or vegetable, as long as there’s not too much chili.

There are none of those choices in our pantry, Do, but there’s some sriracha in the fridge — not for me. A few nights ago, when the boys were with their dad, we decided to have the pork belly strips I’d bought when they were marked down. I didn’t read the small print. Yes, you guessed it, chili glaze. I decided to lessen the burn with some kewpie and prepared lemongrass rice. They were really delicious.

Sorry to disappoint those of you who thought I’d love hot spicy food. As I discovered in North Korea, I cannot eat Kimchi — too much chili.

Thanks for reading.
