When resilience faces the shadow, the stars remember what we forget.

When I was a teenager, many years ago, I watched countless episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. One episode has stayed with me for over thirty years: Season 1’s Skin of Evil.

In this story, Commander Riker declares that all life has a right to exist in the universe. Immediately, Natasha Yar steps forward, embodying courage and resilience. She insists that they will not abandon their shuttle crew. In that moment, she became for me the spiritual embodiment of resilience, a grounded persistence born of love for humanity, willing to sacrifice herself when confronted with threats, yet always moving forward like evolution breaking down strongholds.

Her passion was radiant. Yet she was struck down by Armus, the black, tar‑like entity. Armus asked Riker why they valued life, as if void of any emotion or reverence for existence. Armus was not just a villain; he was the embodiment of evil created by an alien race that refused to confront its own shadow. He was the plague born of repression, the reflection of inner work left undone.

Natasha’s senseless death brought me to tears. It felt like watching innocence destroyed without remorse. Symbolically, she represented humanity’s resilience, while Armus represented the chaos that grows when shadows are denied.

This episode mirrors our world today. Hierarchies of evil expand their influence, creating think tanks to shape how people think. Many who struggle daily become disillusioned, believing that if they adopt the belief systems of their rulers, they too will gain status. Instead, they perpetuate cycles of pride and false grandeur, looking down on others while refusing to confront their own shadows.

When people never confront their inner darkness, chaos multiplies. Hearts grow hard, empathy fades, and people forget how to feel. This is why we see senseless killings, corruption, and the erosion of ethics. Role models walk in pride without shame, spreading unruly behaviors. Those born into privilege often escape accountability, and some even revel in sadism, wars, mass murders, starvation, and atrocities become spectacles for ratings.

The world has reached a breaking point. We see predators such as racist and pedophiles in positions of power, rising costs of living, and systems that feed on suffering. When sadists feed, the very thing they feed off are all connected. Unspoken truths lead to rampant power trips.

Humanity must call out this wickedness. Evil deeds are not too great for reproach. By confronting shadows, we sustain a future for children. Natasha Yar’s sacrifice reminds us: resilience must stand against the shadow, and remembrance must break the silence.
