Alex Cooper Details Her Inspiring Story In ‘Call Her Alex’ Docuseries

“Call Her Daddy” podcast host Alex Cooper details her complicated passage to fame in her inspiring new Hulu docuseries “Call Her Alex.”

The first thing I have to say is that I do not understand why it was two hour-long episodes and not just a documentary? It is not just with this docuseries, but it is every streaming service doing it with their “limited series’.” Just make it a two hour documentary. I will be watching it either way but it is just pointless to call it a series.

Anyways — Cooper opens the docuseries with the start of her “Unwell Tour” in 2023. The first night was in Boston, the same city where she went to college; Meaning that she is experiencing different emotions and nostalgia as that city left such an impactful mark on her.

Growing up, the “Call Her Daddy” host did not get much attention from boys and even had some trouble making friends in general. She found a love for creating home videos and even taught herself how to use Adobe Premiere Pro at just age 10.

Along with filming and editing her own videos, Cooper also had a love for soccer. Her hard work earned her a scholarship to Boston University (BU) for the sport.

Cooper then describes her experience while studying at BU. Her soccer coach Nancy Feldman would constantly single her out and had a weird obsession with her. Everything that Cooper described about Feldman reminded me of what former Nickelodeon stars have said about Dan Schneider and his behavior.

As a former college athlete myself, it is extremely disappointing to hear about how a coach would treat their team. But also as someone who went to their college personally to discuss an issue I was involved in (not sports related), I can unfortunately relate to her.

“What do you want to happen?” was what the Dean at BU told Cooper and her parents, without even reading the evidence documented by Cooper’s mother. I was told the exact same thing from multiple people in power at my college when I went to their offices.

By replying with “what do you want to happen?” just shows that many colleges only want to keep a clean image. Which is very upsetting and frustrating. I feel so deeply for the podcast host and am so happy that she was comfortable to come forward.

Once Cooper graduated from BU, she moved to New York City and struggled to land jobs. She went back to her video production roots and started a YouTube channel. But after feeling inspired by conversations between her and then roommate Sofia Franklyn, they started “Call Her Daddy” from their apartment.

The podcast at the time was known for the two girls discussing their sex and dating experiences. The popularity of the podcast leaped from 12,000 to two million downloads in just two months. Dave Portnoy, the head of Barstool Sports, then reached out to give them a three-year podcast deal.

Barstool Sports has always had this college frat boy energy, up until Cooper and Franklyn were invited in. The impact of these two women in an all-male environment changed Portnoy’s company for the better.

You can really tell how proud Cooper’s parents are of her in the docuseries. If I had the same podcast as Cooper, I think my mother would kill me. It is nice to see her parents being so cool about it and not caring about what others have said to them.

The podcast duo ended up splitting in 2020, leading Cooper to continue the podcast solo. After years of rumors flying around, Cooper has finally given a statement about it.

“It was the classic, ‘You think you see something online and people genuinely believe you’re like sisters, but our relationship was so awful,” Cooper discussed about Franklyn.

Cooper had to develop a new plan for the podcast all by herself. She has since moved onto interviewing different celebrities, mainly other women, about their own relationships and dating lives.

The docuseries showcases how powerful Cooper’s podcast really is. Extra footage is provided about a previous “Call Her Daddy” episode taking place at an abortion clinic in North Carolina. Cooper really cares about spreading awareness on the internet and providing her fans with the proper resources.

Now with SiriusXM, “Call Her Daddy” has progressed so much. Cooper continues to strive as she has continued to bring in popular and powerful guest stars to discuss the main topic of her show. Her most recent guests have been Camila Cabello, Kate Hudson and Simone Biles.

Cooper’s story and podcast are both very uplifting for other women to speak out about their own issues and lives.
