Disney+ Mobile App Watch List Redesign Final Project

May 2025

Project Overview

We were tasked with redesigning a digital customer experience that could make some beneficial changes to improve the experience for the customer. For my project, I focused on the Disney+ Mobile App Watch List, where I redesigned the organization of the section and location of where to find it. I utilized Canva for improved redesign prototype where I laid out all of the new features I implemented. Linked below is a youtube video of my overall presentation of the redesign final project.

The Problem

Some of the specific challenges with this current design are listed below:

1. Difficult Location and Lack of Information Of Location

The mobile app creates a difficult experience for the customer by placing the watchlist location in a slightly hidden place. In order to find the location, you have to go under your profile and find the actual section. This poses an issue since it forces the customer to search the app and click numerous times to locate it.

Additionally, when you enter the Disney+ app, there is no information of where the watchlist might be. If a new customer downloads the app, they have to navigate the unfamiliar interface and find it without any cues of where it might be.

2. Disorganized Layout

Another issue with the current design is the actual watchlist page. All of the content customers save is clumped together into one long list without any organization. This creates a pain point for the customer since the lack of organization does not help to speed up the process of selection something to watch.

To give some more insight into these problems, I create a User Journey Map where I focused on a persona named Maria, which is featured below. Maria is a wife, mother of 3, works a full time job, and has limited free time. Maria struggles with the current layout because she does not have the time or energy to scroll through the app for a long period of time to select something.

For a closer up view of the problems within the journey map, here is a zoomed in version of these issues:

The Solution

In order to delve deeper into potential solutions to the problems with the current design of the Disney+ app, I utilized Canva to create a prototype to visualize these new features.

Some of the features to solve the problems from above are as listed:

1. Watch List Navigation Bar Icon Link

In order to solve the issue of a difficulty locating the watch list and reducing clicks to get to that page, I added a new icon on the navigation bar which will direct the customer to the watch list immediately. With the icon being on the navigation bar, this section is now always on the top of their mind and helps to reduce the time it takes to locate the watch list. Additionally, I paired the icons on the navigation bar with labels for better communication of what the different pages indicate. After further debate to add labels, I went to some of Disney+’s competitors like Netflix, Paramount+, Max, etc. I found that they included labels as well as icons, which I felt like Disney+ should implement.

2. Notification Of The Addition Or Removal Of Content

Another freature I added was notifications of the addition or removal of content for the watch list to indicate the customer of where everything will be placed. The reason behind this feature is so that customers will be immediately notified the exact location of where their content will be. I wanted to provide some clarity such that there will be no confusion on where content will go or where the customer needs to go.

3. Subcategories on the Watch List page

The final fetures I added to the watch list page are subcategories and genre separations. For the subcategories, I added 3 sections: movies, series, and watch again. These subcategories help to provide some separation between the different content the customer has saved for an easier, more organized layout. If the customer still desires a list of everything combined, the list of all of their saved content will be featured right below these subcategories on the main page of the watch list.

When the customer does click on the subcategory button, they are taken to a page of only the content the button specifies. Under this page, the customer will notice that their movies, series, or content previously watched is now categorized into different genres. The reason behind this layout is to keep in mind the mood the customer might be in. In order to speed up the selection process, genres help to give some additional information on the movie or show.

Lastly, if the customer does need to go back to the list of combined content a back button will show up on the left hand corner to take them back to the main page of the watch list.

Results

  • Success metrics, lessons learned, next steps for future iterations, etc. (Recommended length: 3–5 sentences.)

After the redesign, there have been some beneficial results. First, with the addition of the navigation bar icon and notifications, the customer is now satisfied with the easily identifable location of the watch list. The customer knows exactly where their content is being placed, ultimately reducing the time it takes to navigate the app. Additionally, adding in subcategories to the watch list page, supplies the customer with more organization on this page and assists the user to minimize the endless scrolling process. Also, the genre categorization reduces the endless scrolling process and speeds up the selection process. Lastly, not only does this redesign provide a more efficient layout, it also increases the enjoyment of the customer as they interact with this interface.

To get an overview of these results, here is the updated User Journey Map:
