The first Utica Boilermaker 15k road race was won by Rick Rojas from Boulder, CO, in 45:38, almost three minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Utica is a city of about 65,000 population west of Albany, east of Syracuse and a four-plus hour bus ride from Bernardsville, NJ. Utica grew up along the manufacturing and shipping vein of the Erie Canal and lived an economy linked to that historical develpment and how it fed the industry of the age.

The Boilermaker was founded as a way of raising revenue, interest, and tourist traffic to the area. It is difficult to imagine the founders believing the race would be still in existence 46 years later, but the 2024 edition of hosted almost 8,000 competitors in the main 15k race and more than 3,600 5k runners.

In the summer of 1980, Mark Wetmore brought a team of Mine Mount Road Department runners to take part for the first time in what was then known as the 15k national road racing championship. Sponsored by Utica’s West End Brewery, the race awarded Paul Revere Bowls to the winners in each age group and in both 1980 and 1981, the MMRD took more than its fair share of hardware home stained with beer from the party held in the Brewery’s courtyard at the finish line.
