why I keep choosing ink

a few years ago, I wouldn’t have guessed I’d have tattoos. now I have four, and each one feels like another sentence in the story of who I’m becoming.

people assume tattoos are about looking edgy or rebellious. for me they’ve turned into something quieter than that. they’re reminders. promises. pieces of me i decided to keep close enough to see.

the first one is on my right thigh. “Screw perfect,” surrounded by butterflies. it was my way of saying out loud that I was done chasing something that never had an end point. the perfect body, the perfect version of myself, the perfect way to exist so I’d finally feel like enough. perfection is exhausting, and that tattoo is there to remind me my worth was never in flawless skin or a smaller waist. it’s in showing up as I actually am. the butterflies weren’t random either. they’re about transformation, and that’s what I was actually choosing over perfection. growth, not flawlessness.

the lotus sits close to my heart, on my sternum. it grows through mud before it blooms, and I’ve always loved that about it. it reminds me the hard seasons don’t define a person, they prepare them. sometimes beauty doesn’t happen despite the struggle. sometimes it happens because of it.

then there’s my lower back piece. people hear “tramp stamp” and go straight to the stereotype. I don’t. I think confidence. I think femininity, reclaimed on purpose. there’s something about wearing art somewhere that makes me feel beautiful, even if not everyone gets to see it. it was never for anyone’s approval but mine.

my biggest piece changed how i see my whole body. a floral vine stretches across my left thigh, winding through flowers, leaves, butterflies. it’s the largest tattoo i have, but the size isn’t what makes it my favorite. the meaning does.

those flowers remind me growth is gentle, that healing takes time, that my body deserves love now, not only after it changes. i picked my thigh on purpose, because it was a place i used to judge, wishing it smaller or smoother or different. now when i look at it i don’t see flaws. i see art. i see a woman learning to love herself in real time. every flower and vine tells me i don’t have to wait until i’ve lost weight or become some better version of myself to feel beautiful. i can celebrate this body now, while still working toward being healthier and stronger. self love was never a finish line. it’s something i choose again every day, and the tattoos are just proof i kept choosing it.

people ask if they hurt. of course they do. healing is uncomfortable too. but every one of them has left me feeling more like myself, not less. more confident. more feminine. more at home in my own skin. and yes, more sexy, not because tattoos themselves are sexy, but because confidence is. there’s something magnetic about wearing art that reflects who you actually are and not flinching about it.

my tattoos don’t hide my body. they celebrate it. they remind me it isn’t a project waiting to be finished. it’s a home, and it’s already worthy of love today.

this probably won’t be my last one. every piece is more than ink. it’s a memory, a lesson, a promise i keep making to myself. i’m not becoming someone new with each one. i’m just revealing more of the woman i already was.
