Are you an Indian women who suffers from period pain every month? You spend a huge money for purchasing painkillers and made that are harming your immune system eventually. But you already have the solution at your kitchen. I am also dealing with pcos/pmos for 14 years. If you also battling with hormonal/genetical/medical conditions that are worsening the pain, seek medical advice from a gynecologist, endocrinologists. Follow the routine as they mention. Whether you have these issues or not, these tips below will naturally reduce your pain significantly.

I was reading the horrifying and awful experiences of period pain shared by women in the comments section of a sister’s post, alongside comments from a few subhuman men. You can’t make human beings out of such vile people even by beating them, but I am sharing a few home remedies that might offer sisters at least some relief from this inhumane pain:

  1. Limit Outdoor Movement: If you have the means, avoid staying out of the house for long periods 2 to 3 days prior to your period, unless absolutely necessary. As soon as I notice the physical symptoms three days before my period, I refrain from going far from home.

Even if I do go out, I mostly use rickshaws, buses, or ride-sharing services like Pathao (paid ride share services) so that my body isn’t subjected to stress. I didn’t have the time or ability to do this three years ago, but I do now, and I practice it.

  1. Stay Hydrated: Never compromise on water. You must monitor your daily water intake carefully.
  2. Eliminate Outside Food: Stop eating outside food completely. Consume a protein-rich diet instead. Excessively spicy, oily, and seasoned food is the enemy of your period; it oxidizes blood and ruins gut health. Cut it out and learn healthy cooking. If you are on a tight budget, eat two eggs a day.
  3. Cut Out Junk and Processed Sugar: Eliminate all refined sugar, noodles, soft drinks, and fast food from your lifestyle.
  4. Aids for Digestion: Occasionally consume psyllium husk or basil seeds (tokhma). It improves digestion and helps your body absorb nutrients better from your food.
  5. Adjust Your Diet 3–4 Days Prior: Start eating dark chocolate (55%–75%) 3 to 4 days before your expected period date. Eat more fruits and vegetables while completely cutting out outside food. Apply mild hot compresses to your lower back and abdomen.
  6. Garlic Water Remedy: Drink warm garlic-infused boiled water for 3 to 4 days leading up to your period. It works wonders.
  7. Immediate Routine on Day One: As soon as your period starts, resume drinking garlic water, eating fruit, and having dark chocolate. Pain usually sets in within 6 hours. Apply a hot water bag to your lower abdomen and lower back; it relaxes the abdominal muscles and reduces pain, helping the blood flow smoothly.
  8. Physical Exercise & Diet Shifts: Regularly practice exercises targeting your glutes, posture, core, Kegels, or pelvic floor. Abdominal fat is another enemy. Cut down on rice — even if my advice annoys you, replace rice with flatbreads (roti).
  9. Prioritize Sleep: Please, get enough sleep. Sleep from 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Keep romantic late-night chats for the morning or evening, or stay up late only once or twice a week. When you lack sleep, your hormonal balance suffers, and cortisol levels rise — which directly worsens period pain. Maintain proper sleep hygiene at least 3 to 4 days in advance.
  10. Stress Management: If you are feeling overwhelmed by stress, try masturbation/fingering or get a massage. Doing this in the days leading up to your period helps lower stress. High stress increases cortisol levels, which in turn intensifies period pain.
  11. Hormonal Benefits of Intimacy: A significant body of research proves that having sex during your period, or within 4 days prior, helps balance dopamine, oxytocin, and libido hormones. Your pelvic muscles relax, and pain naturally decreases.
  12. Hygiene & Pad Care: Out of embarrassment, many women don’t admit that they fail to buy enough pads due to financial constraints. You must change your pad 2 to 4 times within 24 hours depending on your flow. Always wash and sanitize your hands thoroughly before changing pads. If you need to place a fresh pad down somewhere during the change, put it over a clean tissue, handkerchief, or towel. Please wrap used pads in newspaper or plastic and dispose of them in a dustbin on the same day.
  13. Choose the Right Products: Cheap silicone-based pads can cause allergies or inflammation, leading to abdominal discomfort. Cotton-surface pads (like the purple-packaged Anannya series from Fresh or the pink-packaged Freedom cotton series) are currently among the best cotton options available locally. Keep 2–3 packs in stock.
    1. Boil raw cumin, a small amount of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and raw turmeric together. Store the liquid in a bottle and take it to the office. Sipping small amounts of this throughout the day during painful period days provides great relief — this is proven.
    1. Also, avoid drinking cold water from the fridge.

During the months I follow these rules to the letter, my pain is significantly milder or subsides quickly, leaving my body in a condition where I can continue with daily tasks.

Finally, refrain from seeking medical advice on Facebook or buying random medications based on pharmacy recommendations. If you have financial limitations, consult a doctor at a government hospital, get your medical tests done thoroughly there, and strictly follow professional medical advice.
