The World of Wealth

This world of wealth is strange, my dear, No worth for bonds, just money’s cheer. In money’s game, even kin beg near, Understand, young one, this truth is clear. Speak two words, but they cut like a spear, In this age, none — child nor mother — can steer, Now it’s the money chest we hold most dear. Understand, young one, this truth is clear. Even in dreams, money’s schemes appear, In food, in drink, in prayers sincere, In every act, money’s whims interfere. The worth was learned when death drew near, Understand, young one, this truth is clear.

Oh Lord! What is this money’s snare? Even blood is sold in the market’s glare. Today I grasp what’s ahead, beware — Festivals loom, and Diwali’s in the air. A voice above said, “Child, this is fair — This world of wealth, its burden you must bear.”

Theme

The central theme of the poem is the overwhelming and often destructive influence of money in modern life. The poet critiques how it corrupts relationships, spirituality, and even the very essence of humanity, leaving individuals trapped in a cycle where wealth is both the means and the end. Despite this grim reality, there’s an underlying tone of resignation, acknowledging that this is the way the world functions now, with little hope for change.
