GoPro Isn’t Dead: How the “Mission 1” Could Redefine Action Cameras in 2026
GoPro’s Mission 1 may redefine action cameras with 8K video, open-gate recording, and interchangeable lenses. Is this its comeback?

8K 60fps, 4K 240fps and 1080p 960fps video recording, 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps OPEN GATE video recording, 50MP capture, 14 stops of dynamic range, 5+ hours video recording, battery grip for all-day working, interchangeable lens mount, processor with AI Neural Processor Unit, hearing all those, you are probably thinking I am saying about a mirrorless camera from Sony, Canon, Nikon or Fujifilm. But it’s not. It is GoPro’s reinvention of the action camera, called “The Mission 1”.
Everyone had been expecting the closing event or announcement about GoPro’s shutdown for a long time. Once the pioneering company of action cameras, it is now struggling to survive. I saw plenty of videos over the last two years saying that GoPro is dying.
Everyone was and is saying GoPro is dead, or is it? The new MISSION 1 action Camera.

They were making very good cameras, but in terms of specifications and price point, that was not cutting it. People who once prized this action camera are now switching to other brands, specifically the DJI, Insta360, or lower-priced Akaso. These new companies are offering more features than GoPro at a lower price point. The user requirements for action cameras, basically for amateur content creators, are well understood by companies like DJI, Insta360, and Akaso, who design their gadgets accordingly.

GoPro seems to have lost its way a little bit. Their last action camera, the GoPro Hero 13, was a very good camera. Still, compared to its close competitors, DJI’s Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 5 Pro, Insta360’s Ace Pro 2 were statistically ahead of Hero 13. Also, the Hero 13 was released in 2024, and since then, they have not released a single camera. But in the action camera market, every other brand is releasing new cameras each year with new features. So the GoPro was far behind. And the company’s broken financial news pushes the customers away because of the lack of confidence in its future. But just a few days ago, GoPro dropped a bomb on the content-creator market. They are going to reinvent the action camera market as they did previously.

They are going to release a new lineup of action cameras. They are calling it “The Mission 1”. It is a very new lineup in the action camera market. They are saying it: “The World’s Smallest, Lightest, Most Rugged Cinema Cameras Designed for Any Mission”. It offers a new 1-inch sensor. Compared with its sensor size, DJI offers a 1/1.1-inch sensor, while Insta Ace Pro 2 offers a 1/1.3-inch sensor. Other specifications are great: 50 megapixel image capture, 8K video at 60 frames per second, 4K video at 240 frames per second, and incredible 1080p video at 960 frames per second. And the most impressive part of it is that it can record 8K video at 30 frames per second with OPEN GATE. You can also shoot 4K at 120 frames per second in OPEN GATE mode, too. No other action camera can shoot in OPEN GATE mode, yet. With a 1-inch sensor, it can capture 14 stops of dynamic range. And with this big sensor, the low-light performance will be incredible.
It also offers a stunning 240Mbps and captures HLG-HDR, 10-Bit Color with GP-Log2, and Timecode Sync for multi-camera shoots. Feels like it’s a fusion of GoPro’s innovation and the current market-leading DJI Osmo Action 6 and Insta Ace Pro 2’s super features and many more. And they added a new feature that was missing in Hero 13: you can dive with it up to 20 meters (66 feet) just with the camera, no additional housing needed. The new 2150mAh Enduro 2 Battery promises a long operating time (5+ hours at 1080p 30fps) compared to other action cameras. Currently, this is the highest battery capacity among flagship models. But you can also go for a premium Volta 2-powered battery grip. It acts as a tripod and provides a 5800mAh battery for up to 9 hours of 4K 30fps recording.
They are planning to release 3 versions: MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO ILS, and MISSION 1 for entry-level users. The MISSION 1 Pro has 4 different packaging options: MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, MISSION 1 PRO Creator Edition, MISSION 1 PRO Ultimate Creator Edition.

What caught my eye is MISSION 1 PRO ILS version. This one supports an external lens, which was available in any other action camera. That means you can say it’s a mirrorless camera rather than an action camera. It supports Micro Four-Thirds-mount lenses, which is a vast universe of options. Thousands of Micro Four-Thirds lenses are available. Now you can try different lenses with different feels, image tones, and ranges, among other things. Though by default Micro Four-Thirds gives you a 2x crop, with a 1-inch sensor, you are likely to get another 1.35x crop on top of that. So the final crop factor will be 2.7 times, equivalent to a 35mm sensor. That’s huge. How good is a regular 300 mm lens for wildlife photography with this camera? For this camera, it will work at 300 × 2.7, or 810mm, which is already too far. For a longer focal length of more than 300mm, I do not want to calculate the reach; it will be far away. With its 5nm GP3 processor, an AI Neural Processor Unit, and 3.2µm fused pixels in Quad Bayer mode, it should produce very good, sharp photos and video. Maybe many amateur wildlife photographers will start shooting with it.

They have declared the release date is May 28, 2026. But with the details, I am already really hyped. As GoPro is rewriting the definition of action cameras again, it could be a great breakthrough for its comeback. Finger crossed.
