The Data You Cannot Hide

The way you flinch when something jumps out at you. The way your heart rate changes when you see a familiar face. This is not just behavioral data. It is biometric data. It is the data of your unconscious self.

The ethical challenges are profound. The companies that design these platforms are not just selling hardware. They are selling access to your home. They are selling the data of your daily life. The Generation That Will Never Leave

The most vulnerable population in this new ecosystem is children. Their brains are still developing. Their sense of reality is still forming. And they are being immersed in virtual worlds that are designed to be more engaging, more rewarding, and more addictive than anything the real world can offer.

Or we can demand something different. We can demand privacy by design. We can demand ethical guidelines that protect the most vulnerable. We can demand that the value creation process in metaverses be informed by responsible design and digital responsibility frameworks. Without such considerations, value creation risks being short-term or even harmful to users and society.

The metaverse promises to extend our physical world using AR and VR technologies. But extension is not the same as replacement. The real world is not lesser. It is not less engaging. It is not less real. It is the only world we all share. And we must not forget that.

I still put on my headset. I still climb virtual mountains and explore virtual worlds. But I do it differently now. I do it with my eyes open. I do it knowing that every step I take in the virtual world leaves a footprint in someone’s database. I do it knowing that the ecosystems I enter are not neutral. They are designed. And they are designed to extract value from me.

That does not mean I stop using them. It means I use them with intention. It means I demand better. It means I remember that the headset is a door, not a cage. And I can always choose to walk back through it.

The worlds inside our walls are here to stay. The question is whether we will live in them as citizens or as products. Whether we will shape them or be shaped by them.
