Solving for teams that bring the product to life

Q: Are you designing with purpose: solving for both user needs and the teams that bring the product to life?
If your team isn’t happy, do you think they can build a lovable product? As product designers, we focus on user needs and building great products, but we’re equally responsible for building strong teams.
Let me start with a quick story. We had a full-stack team, UX Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, and QA testers, a perfect formula for success.

Simple and smooth, right? or at least that’s how it seemed. By the second month, I felt confident; by the third, comfortable. Then came a turning point…
Despite delivering what was asked, we noticed some customers were still churning. To understand why, we joined a customer call and what we heard was eye-opening. The real pain points and needs were quite different from the requirements we had been working on.
That’s when we realized there was a gap between internal assumptions and the actual customer experience. We took a step back, started asking more thoughtful questions, but that alone wasn’t enough.
So, with the support of the whole UX team, we began exploring ways to improve our process.
After several collaborations and discussions within the UX team, we identified key concerns and began developing ideas to drive improvements.

Planning: mapping problems and ideas through collaborative teamwork across the design team.
We introduced some key improvements.
- Design Documentation: Include every key detail and question to ensure clear tracking and alignment throughout the process.
- Peer review sessions
- Async collaborations: Apply at every stage
- UX Research activities: Unmoderated light-weight methods
I volunteered to be the first to test these ideas by integrating them into my daily deliverables, both to see their impact on the team and on my own growth. Soon, these key improvements began strengthening our teams and significantly improving collaboration and outcomes.
Early in my career, I saw processes as slow and limiting. But in fast-paced environments, I realized that a lack of structure often led to rework and inefficiencies. That’s when I understood the true value of a well-designed process; it’s not about slowing down, but about building a strong foundation to move faster, with fewer mistakes and better alignment. Today, I see process as a key driver of quality, scalability, and long-term success.
What started as a typical usability session quickly turned into a turning point in my career. I realized I wasn’t just gathering feedback, I was identifying business gaps, uncovering unmet needs, and connecting dots across design, product, and engineering.
That call sparked my transition from UX to Product Design.
Where UX focuses on creating seamless, user-centered experiences, Product Design brings a wider lens, merging user empathy with business strategy, technical constraints, and team alignment. It’s not just about how things look or feel, but it’s also about making the right decisions, for the right reasons, at the right time.
Since that moment, my approach to design has changed fundamentally. I now think in terms of systems, outcomes, and cross-functional impact. I ask harder questions, collaborate more deeply, and design with both users and the people building for them in mind.
That call didn’t just change how I design, it reshaped how I think.
Huge thanks to my manager, **Ruchira Kumar, Director of UX**, and the entire team for all the great discussions and teamwork that helped us build better things together.
