What Negatively Influences Our Estimation of Jesus: Familiarity

There is a saying that familiarity breeds contempt. While familiarity itself is not wrong, it becomes dangerous when it causes us to lose our sense of wonder, honour, and faith. This is exactly what happened in Mark 6:3–6. Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth and taught in the synagogue. The people were astonished by His wisdom and the mighty works He performed, yet instead of responding with faith, they responded with skepticism. They asked, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?” They could not look beyond the Jesus they had grown up with to recognize the Messiah standing before them.

The people of Nazareth were so familiar with Jesus that they underestimated Him. They knew His family, His occupation, and His background. They had watched Him grow up. Yet their familiarity blinded them to His true identity and caused them to miss what God was doing in their midst. Rather than seeing the Son of God, they only saw the carpenter. Rather than honouring Him, they were offended by Him. Their familiarity produced unbelief, and their unbelief prevented them from experiencing the fullness of His power.

This danger is not limited to the people of Nazareth. Many believers today face the same challenge. We can become so accustomed to church services, Bible reading, prayer meetings, worship songs, and Christian language that we begin to treat them as ordinary. We hear the gospel so often that we stop being amazed by it. We become familiar with God’s blessings and forget to be thankful for them. We approach prayer casually, neglect the Scriptures, and lose the expectation that God is still able to work mightily in our lives. What was once precious can become routine if we are not careful.

Scripture repeatedly warns against losing our reverence for God. In Revelation 2:4, Jesus rebuked the church in Ephesus because they had left their first love. Their actions remained, but their passion had faded. Psalm 103:2 encourages us to “forget not all his benefits,” reminding us to continually remember and appreciate God’s goodness. Hebrews 11:6 teaches that without faith it is impossible to please God, and Mark 6:5–6 shows how unbelief limited what the people of Nazareth experienced from Jesus. Their problem was not a lack of exposure to Him; it was a lack of faith in Him.

The tragedy of Nazareth is that the very people who should have recognized Jesus were the ones who rejected Him. They were closest to Him, yet they failed to honour Him. They missed their moment of visitation because they allowed familiarity to cloud their vision. In the same way, we must guard our hearts against becoming spiritually complacent. Every time we open God’s Word, we should do so with expectation. Every time we pray, we should remember that we are speaking to the King of kings. Every worship service is an opportunity to encounter God afresh.

The more familiar we become with Christ, the greater our appreciation for Him should be. Familiarity should deepen our love, not diminish our estimation.

May we never become so accustomed to the things of God that we lose our awe of Him. Instead, let us approach Him daily with fresh faith, gratitude, and reverence, recognizing that the same Jesus who walked in Nazareth is still at work today.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have taken You for granted. Renew my faith and restore my wonder at who You are. Help me to honour Your presence, value Your Word, and approach You with reverence and expectation. May familiarity never diminish my estimation of You, but instead deepen my love and appreciation for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
