Und was passiert?

Leise. Ohne Applaus. Ohne Extrawurst. Weil das früher einfach selbstverständlich war.

🇬🇧 🇺🇲 The Cliché of the Man Part III The Vegan Stroke: The Celebrated Antihero

At BFW Oberhausen, they squeeze out of men (and women) in six weeks what they’re really “made of.” The first three weeks are a merciless cull: endless tests, psychometric procedures, stress trials. These first three weeks don’t officially count for much — they’re just there to mark the weak early. From week four and five, it gets serious. That’s when the really expensive recommendations for the payers come in: up to 130,000 euros per head. That’s why people pilgrimage to this boarding-school hell, grind, suffer, and fight. Because it’s worth it.

Monday morning, 9 a.m. Testing begins. 10:20 a.m. break. When the group returns, one chair is empty. Unrest among the women. “The vegan,” someone whispers. He had a “weakness episode.” Felt like another stroke, he says later. Ambulance, examination, all clear. No acute findings. Still, he insists on overnight hospital observation. Next day: green light.

Two days later he shows up again — not to keep going, but to deliver a lengthy lecture during the break: He has to take it easy now. They’ll surely cook him a special meal so he can rejoin the next assessment in week four. After all, “nothing really happened.”

Just picture it.

There stands a guy staging himself as fragile in front of people — and in front of me, someone who deals with real, daily brutal balance disorders. In front of someone who barely made it to the program but still shows up. Who refuses to collapse. Who practices hardness against himself because he knows: no one else will do it for him.

And what happens? The vegan weakness episode becomes the event of the days. The women immediately switch into collective mother-hen protector mode. Big eyes, worried voices, emotional energy that should actually be reserved for those who actually endure. “Poor guy.” it basks in the attention. The antihero enjoys his role as the sensitive victim of circumstances.

This is not an isolated case. It’s a symptom.

We live in a time when weakness is celebrated — as long as it’s stylishly packaged: vegan, mindful, vulnerable, “conscious.” The classic man who grits his teeth, who functions despite the pain, who takes responsibility — he’s considered toxic, outdated, insensitive. Instead, we celebrate the one who collapses at the first sign of stress and turns it into a narrative event. The cauliflower Barbie on two legs who would have survived in the terrarium of modern emotional culture — as an invertebrate.

How broken does a mindset have to be to program yourself so consistently as a victim? How often will this guy drop out again at the next “weakness episode”? And above all: How deep is the civilizational rupture when women abandon biologically sensible selection behavior and instead pamper the weakest man in the room — while those who actually fight just watch tiredly?

It’s not just embarrassing. It’s symptomatic of a society that pathologizes strength and elevates weakness to the new virtue. The vegan stroke is no coincidence. It is the logical consequence of an upbringing that teaches boys from an early age that their natural robustness is a problem.

The man who doesn’t let himself fall still stands. Quietly. Without applause. Without a special meal. Because that used to simply be self-evident.
