How I Passed the KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate) Certification

I’ve successfully passed the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) certification! It was quite a journey, and I wanted to share my preparation strategy, resources, and tips to help anyone else preparing for this exam.

My Preparation Journey

I started preparing around Uttarayan, dedicating approximately 2 weeks to this certification. Here’s how I structured my study time:

• First few days: Focused entirely on video lectures to build foundational understanding
• Remaining days: Heavy focus on hands-on practice and labs

Even though the KCNA is a multiple-choice exam, I strongly believe in learning by doing. Practical experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies helped me understand concepts deeply rather than just memorizing answers.

Understanding the Exam Pattern

Before diving into preparation, it’s crucial to know what you’re up against:

• Format: 60 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
• Duration: 90 minutes
• Passing Score: You need to score adequately to pass (check the latest requirements)
• Exam Type: Remote proctored exam

Time Management Tip: With 90 minutes for 60 questions, you have roughly 1.5 minutes per question. Flag questions you’re unsure about and review them at the end if time permits.

Remote Proctored Exam Experience, Important Tips!

The remote proctored exam can be tricky if you’re not prepared. Here’s my advice:

Before the Exam:

• Double-verify your exam date and time: Check the portal multiple times!
• Clear your exam room completely: Remove monitors, phones, sticky notes, whiteboards, and any other materials
• Test your setup: Ensure your laptop, webcam, and internet connection are working properly
• Have your ID ready: Government-issued photo ID for verification
• Turn off ALL alarms and notifications: This includes your phone, laptop, and any other devices
• Inform family members: Make sure nobody interrupts you during the exam
• Use a room with a lock: Trust me on this one!

During the Exam:

• Be patient with the check-in process; it can take 15–30 minutes
• Follow proctor instructions carefully
• The proctor will ask you to show your room via webcam (360-degree view)
• Keep your phone away and visible to the camera
• Stay in the camera frame at all times
• Don’t panic if there are technical issues; communicate with the proctor

My Personal Experience: Let’s just say my exam had every possible chaos you can imagine : laptop crashes, alarm interruptions, family walking in, and more. But staying calm and communicating with the proctor helped me get through it. Be prepared for the unexpected!

Day Before Exam:

• Quick revision of notes
• Practiced more MCQs
• Ensured exam environment was ready

Key Topics to Focus On

Based on my exam experience, make sure you’re comfortable with:

• Kubernetes architecture and components
• Container fundamentals (Docker, containerd)
• Cloud-native architecture patterns
• Kubernetes objects (Pods, Deployments, Services, etc.)
• Observability and monitoring basics
• GitOps and CI/CD concepts
• Security fundamentals in cloud-native environments
• CNCF landscape and projects

Final Thoughts

The KCNA certification is very achievable with the right preparation and resources. Focus on understanding concepts rather than rote memorization. Hands-on practice, even for an MCQ exam, makes a huge difference.
