I’LL MAKE A MAN OUT OF YOU: A LIFELONG PROCESS OF EDUCATION AND DISCIPLINE ON BECOMING A LEADER

Strong in body, sharp in mind, and clear in purpose is what every leader should be. But in the Philippine context, many young people are increasingly frustrated by ongoing political issues, leading to social media debates filled with “what if” questions—such as a country without corruption or a government led only by capable, just, and well-trained leaders. In The Republic, Plato, through Socrates, presents the idea of the ideal city and the philosopher-king, arguing that effective leadership requires years of rigorous education, experience, and self-mastery. For Plato, only through disciplined learning and personal development can a person become fit to govern others wisely.

Socrates describes the Kallipolis, or the “ideal city,” as a society founded on justice and divided into three classes: philosopher-rulers, soldier-guardians, and producers. He explains that future rulers must undergo rigorous education and training from childhood, studying subjects such as gymnastics, mathematics, and music, while poetry and certain arts are restricted because they can mislead people away from truth. Future philosopher-kings must also gain years of experience in warfare and public service before ruling. Only those who prove themselves excellent in both knowledge and character are allowed to govern at the age of fifty, reflecting Plato’s belief that wisdom, discipline, and experience are essential qualities of a just leader. According to Boyer (2022), Plato argues that his ideal government, through its structured social system and rigorous educational program, is designed to control the personal ambitions and self-interest of those in power. Rulers are envisioned as philosophers who, after years of training, learning, and hardship, gain deep familiarity with the Good. Plato emphasizes that prudence is developed through a lifelong process of education, discipline, and experience, where individuals are trained to govern both themselves and others wisely. This development requires not only theoretical learning but also practical experience, allowing future leaders to apply knowledge in real situations. Together, these form the basis of excellence in leadership, reinforcing Plato’s view that true rulers must be shaped by both wisdom and virtue. This is further reflected in Socrates’ statement: “If you discover a life better than ruling for those who are going to rule, it is possible that your well-governed city will come into being. For here alone will the really rich rule, rich not in gold but in those riches required by the happy man, rich in a good and prudent life,” highlighting that genuine leadership is grounded in prudence, moral excellence, and a life oriented toward virtue rather than wealth or ambition.

In conclusion, leadership is not immediate—it will make the man out of you because of the continuous education, discipline, experience, and moral formation that will develop all throughout the years. As shown in The Republic, only those who undergo lifelong training and cultivate prudence, wisdom and excellence can become truly capable rulers. In the Philippine context, this serves as a reminder that leaders should likewise be evaluated not only by popularity or ambition, but by proven experience in serving others. Ultimately, one should become strong in body, sharp in mind, and clear in purpose in order to lead others wisely, justly, and with genuine concern for the common good.
