Beauty’s Appeal Lifts the Veil of Pain

Beauty dulls the sadness!

In nature, art, music, or human character, beauty can soften our pain, assuage our grief, and momentarily lift the burdens of life.

It offers relief — not by disconnecting the source of suffering but by shifting away awareness.

People standing before a splendid sunrise or listening to a soul-stirring symphony speak of their strife vanishing. Beauty quiets, calms, and gently numbs annoyances.

An anesthetic that awakens!

But unlike a clinical anesthetic, beauty fails to put our sensibilities to sleep. It awakens us. It may anesthetize pain, but it sensitizes the soul.

It accelerates our awareness of life’s greater inferences, evokes a longing for something eternal.

For example, the Baha’i Writings describes a cleaned up humanity as mirrors reflecting the beautiful spiritual sunrise that draws our hearts to God.

We, verily, have cleansed Thy breast from the whisperings of the people and sanctified it from earthly allusions, that the light of My beauty may appear therein and be reflected in the mirrors of all the worlds. — Bahá’u’lláh, The Summons of the Lord of Hosts.

That way, the illumination of beauty eases worldly distress while simultaneously stirring spiritual yearning.

Truthfully, beauty can be an anesthetic, but it is more than that. It’s also a revealer, a reminder, and, at times, a gentle guide toward healing rather than merely a shield from hurt.

When anguished and sorrowed by grief I turn to a trusted belief. In beauty I find A solace so kind, Becoming my spirit’s relief.
