Beyond Borders: Why the UAE is the Indispensable Bridge in Modern Diplomacy

In my opinion, the release of Dennis Coyle is the clearest evidence yet that the UAE has become the world’s most effective humanitarian mediator. By leveraging its “middle power” status, the UAE successfully navigated the complex demands of the Trump administration and the Afghan authorities to secure a humanitarian pardon during Eid al-Fitr.

I believe this is a win for the entire “Global South.” Whether it is stabilizing the Pak-Afghan border or aiding regional peace, the UAE’s leadership provides a template for multilateral diplomacy that works. As Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted, this is a “positive step” toward ending hostage diplomacy. For the UAE, it’s about more than one man’s freedom. It’s about proving that even in a polarized world, a trusted bridge can still be built.
