Mysteries of Sleep, Sleep Paralysis, and the Old Hag Phenomenon: A Personal Journey”

A Personal Journey”

I can remember as a little girl being held down screaming no one heard me I can see around my room trying to focus on what I was seeing as I struggled to move my head streaming to only myself. I remembered that overwhelming feeling. I was scared, exhausted, and beaten down physically emotionally, and mentally. I held that secret for a very long time from everyone!!

I thought I was different and was ashamed. 3 times a week the Ole hag took total control of me at the age of 14yrs my 3 younger siblings were experiencing the same thing, so I felt comfortable sharing my frightening experiences as well, our parents found out so they would pray over us..My older siblings thought something was wrong with us only if they knew! Me and my 3 younger siblings would sleep together holding each other with a bible under our pillars as we all got older moved out started our own families it got to the point where I couldn’t sleep at night I was too afraid I would never wake up. At that point in my life, I started seeing dark shadows. I would doze off why sitting up in a room full of people walking around they all seemed so calm, I was fighting for life little did they know. Still, no one heard me screaming no one had seen men from the 1700ths screaming in my face with some type of paper scroll saying I was guilty, I panicked for a second and then said the LORD’S PRAYER did the job it worked all the time. In my late 20s, things speeded up with time and so did the hag!! Sleep got scary longer and creeper to the point I felt so exhausted from repeating The Lord's Prayer fight was gone the hag would let me up and then get back on me seconds later. I thought I would die that’s when I panicked why saying the lord’s Prayer. Although it’s a complicated and intriguing part of life, sleep is still mostly understood to be mysterious. Numerous occurrences related to sleep captivate our attention and feed into long-held myths and legends. This article will explore the distinctions between sleep paralysis, regular sleep, and the fascinating “Old Hag” phenomenon. It will also look at the science underlying these differences and the cultural beliefs around these experiences.

  1. Understanding Sleep: It is an inherent and important aspect of our everyday regimen. There are various phases to it, such as non-REM and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Our bodies go through a variety of physiological changes during these cycles, and REM sleep is when dreams frequently happen. The majority of people go through these phases without any problems and with ease.
  2. The Science of Sleep Paralysis: When a person switches from one state of wakefulness to another, they can experience a phenomenon known as sleep paralysis. Our bodies go through a brief paralysis during REM sleep, called REM atonia, to keep us from enacting our dreams. Sometimes people wake up before this paralysis goes away, which leaves them feeling as though they can’t move or talk. Chest tightness and vivid hallucinations are common symptoms of sleep paralysis.
  3. Old Hag Syndrome: The Old Hag phenomenon, sometimes referred to as hallucinogenic sleep paralysis, gives the experience an additional element of mystery. People have reported a recurrent motif during bouts of sleep paralysis in many cultures around the world: the appearance of a malevolent creature, usually portrayed as an old hag, witch, or demon. It is thought that this spirit rests on the afflicted person’s chest, making breathing challenging for them.
  4. Folklore and Cultural Beliefs: Folklore and cultural beliefs have been influenced by the Old Hag phenomenon. Comparable experiences have been viewed via the prism of regional mythology in other civilizations. In the United States South, it’s called “Southern Hagging,” while in Newfoundland, Canada, it’s called “Old Hagging, the tendency of human beings to attribute a supernatural element to the unknown.
  5. The Intersection of Belief and Science: Folklore and cultural beliefs offer a distinct viewpoint on sleep paralysis and other physiological characteristics of sleep that science is unable to explain. We can appreciate the richness of human experiences and how our cultural backgrounds influence how we perceive the world around us when science and belief come together.
  6. we are still fascinated by the enigmatic world of sleep, which includes events like sleep paralysis and the Old Hag experience. We can appreciate the rich tapestry of human experiences that is revealed in the realm of dreams and sleep by learning about the scientific underpinnings of these events as well as the cultural beliefs that surround them. The next time you find yourself caught between wakefulness and slumber, remember that the line between science and the supernatural is often blurred, inviting us to explore the fascinating mysteries that lie within our minds.
