Die with Zero

I recently came across the concept of “Die with Zero.” As I understand it, it warns against the risk of saving too much and missing out on opportunities to enjoy life with that money. Spending money to create memories with my family brings me rewards that last a lifetime. Giving money to my kids when they actually need it is far more impactful than simply leaving it as an inheritance.

In a way, the “Die with Zero” mindset treats money as a kind of long-term optimization problem, like the knapsack problem in computer science. We should be able to recognize the moments that is worth spending money on, instead of merely being frugal or saving endlessly for the future.

This idea aligns perfectly with my own experience. My one-year break from work and living abroad with my entire family have been worth every opportunity cost. Language learning has its own timing. Spending all day together every day brings us closer to each other. Exploring nature and visiting amazing spots together will pay lifelong memory dividends. None of this would be possible again if we missed this window of opportunity.
