The Most Interesting Thing About AI in Healthcare May Be… Spreadsheets

Most conversations about AI in healthcare focus on diagnosis.

Can AI detect cancer earlier? Can it read scans faster? Can it replace part of clinical decision-making?

But after spending time reading about digital health systems, I sometimes think the bigger story is much less dramatic.

It is admin work.

The forms. The duplicated data. The endless spreadsheets. The information was copied from one system into another because two platforms still cannot communicate properly.

That is why tools like ChatGPT Spreadsheets caught my attention.

Not because spreadsheets are exciting.

Because almost every industry quietly runs on them.

Healthcare included.

A huge amount of hospital and clinic work still depends on manual tracking, disconnected systems, and staff trying to organise information under pressure. Waiting lists, rota planning, audits, referrals, service tracking, research coordination — much of it eventually lands in a spreadsheet somewhere.

And most people using those spreadsheets are not data engineers.

They are busy staff trying to make the systems work.

That is where AI may become genuinely useful.

Not by replacing healthcare professionals, but by reducing friction around repetitive administrative work that consumes time and energy every day.

Of course, there are still important concerns.

In Europe, especially, healthcare AI moves more carefully because privacy rules, governance requirements, and patient data protection matter. And honestly, they should matter.

Healthcare information is not the same as marketing analytics or sales reports.

Accuracy matters. Context matters. Security matters.

Still, I think one of the biggest healthcare technology shifts over the next few years may not come from futuristic robots or dramatic headlines.

It may come from making ordinary systems less painful to use.

Sometimes innovation is not about adding complexity.

Sometimes it is simply about helping exhausted people spend less time fighting spreadsheets.
