Why One Foster Care Speech in Idaho Still Stays With Dominic Carter

Every once in a while, a single moment reminds you exactly why your work matters.

For nationally recognized foster care speaker and child advocate Dominic Carter, one of those moments happened during a speaking engagement in Idaho that he says he will never forget.

Over the years, Dominic Carter has traveled across America speaking to foster parents, foster teenagers, social workers, child advocates, and organizations dedicated to helping vulnerable children. His presentations often focus on resilience, overcoming adversity, and the life-changing impact that encouragement and mentorship can have on young people.

But one particular experience in Idaho stayed with him long after the event ended.

Dominic had been invited to Idaho to speak at a foster care conference on behalf of the state. During one presentation, he addressed foster parents and community partners. Moments later, he spoke directly to foster teenagers and children.

One thing Dominic often does during his presentations is invite audience members onto the stage. He asks simple but meaningful questions to create engagement and connection.

To foster parents, he may ask:

“Why do you do what you do?”

What has always moved him deeply is how emotional many foster parents become when answering that question publicly.

Foster care is not easy work. It requires patience, sacrifice, compassion, and emotional strength. Many foster parents quietly dedicate themselves to helping children heal without seeking recognition.

During the Idaho event, Dominic invited a young foster child onto the stage — a little girl around eight to ten years old.

At first, she appeared extremely shy and nervous speaking in front of the audience. Dominic later learned she struggled with confidence because of the trauma and instability connected to foster care.

Still, she bravely participated.

As he often does during events, Dominic gave the child a small gift from New York as a gesture of encouragement and connection.

Several weeks later, Dominic received a letter from the child’s caseworker.

It was a letter, he says, he will carry with him forever.

The caseworker explained that after participating in the event, the little girl slowly began coming out of her shell. She even joined her school’s theater club and started thriving socially and emotionally.

“That’s why I do this work,” Dominic says. “If you can help even one child believe in themselves again, it matters.”

Growing up with instability himself, Dominic Carter understands firsthand many of the emotional struggles foster children face. His own journey from adversity to becoming a respected national television and radio journalist, keynote speaker, and child advocate continues to inspire audiences throughout the country.

For Dominic, foster care advocacy is not about politics.

“It’s about children,” he says. “It’s about hope. It’s about making sure young people know their lives still matter.”

Today, Dominic continues speaking nationwide on foster care, childhood adversity, resilience, mentorship, and youth empowerment.
