THE US EMBASSY IN ESWATINI SHOULD SHUT UP

Hypocrisy is the only word that could best describe the attitude of the Embassy of the United States regarding the statement it issued following the guilty verdict against jailed Members of Parliament Mthandeni Dube and Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza.

This is an embassy whose government is pursuing criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, accusing him of fomenting an insurrection and conspiring against the government over his attempt to subvert the outcome of the 2020 election, and the bloody attack on the US Capitol. Not only that, but the US Government has charged more than 1000 American citizens for having participated in the January 6 insurrection.

But the embassy expects the Government of Eswatini to fold its arms and do nothing in the face of an insurrection that was fuelled by statements made publicly by Dube, Mabuza and now fugitive former MP Mduduzi Gawuzela Simelane. The embassy chooses to call what these three individuals did simply as “voices of dissent that called for nonviolent reform”. Who then does the embassy know to be responsible for the violence that erupted in the country between June 2021 and December 2022? Did the country’s private and public structures burn themselves? Did the shops loot themselves? Is the embassy saying no one committed an offence in all these?

As a country, Eswatini will not be dictated to by the United States, which wants insurrectionists not to be held accountable in Eswatini but be held accountable only by the US. Eswatini will not allow the United States to interfere with the independence of the Kingdom’s judiciary. Is it not the US that always advocates for Judicial independence? Eswatini is a sovereign country and so is the United States. Let the sovereignty of each country be respected. Bacede and Mthandeni will be sentenced in accordance with the crimes they have been found guilty of having committed.

The US is carrying out the highest persecution of someone with a dissenting voice — former President Donald Trump. Focus on that injustice, and learn from the justice that is taking place in Eswatini. Period.
