What actually causes breast cancer? (it’s not what most people think)

“There is no single **cause of breast cancer**.”

It’s caused by a mix of genetics, hormones, age, and lifestyle — not one identifiable trigger. Only 5–10% of cases are linked to inherited genes like BRCA1/BRCA2.

🎀 Triple negative breast cancer = tests negative for estrogen, progesterone, AND HER2 receptors. Grows faster, fewer targeted therapy options.

🎀 HER2 positive = elevated HER2 protein driving faster growth — but responds well to targeted therapies developed over the last two decades.

🎀 Inflammatory breast cancer often looks like redness/swelling, not a lump — easy to mistake for infection, which is why awareness of the symptom matters.

We put together a full breakdown — causes, types, risk assessment, and where supportive care realistically fits into a patient’s journey (spoiler: alongside treatment, never instead of it). Link below ↓

Breast cancer risk isn’t just genetics — what I learned putting together a guide on this

Been researching this for work recently and wanted to share a few things that surprised me, since breast cancer awareness content online is often either overly scary or way too vague.

A few things worth knowing: • Only 5–10% of cases are linked to inherited genes (BRCA1/BRCA2) — most cases result from a mix of age, hormonal history, and lifestyle factors, not a single cause. • Indian women are being diagnosed roughly a decade earlier on average compared to Western countries, which is part of why awareness matters more here, not less. • Inflammatory breast cancer often doesn’t present as a lump at all — it can look like redness/swelling and gets mistaken for an infection, which delays diagnosis. • Doctors now classify cancers by receptor status (ER/PR/HER2), not just location — this is why you’ll hear terms like “triple negative” or “HER2 positive,” and it directly determines treatment options.

Full disclosure: I work with Health Reactive India, an Ayurvedic wellness company, and we put together a longer guide covering all of this in more depth — happy to share the link if anyone wants it, just didn’t want to drop it unprompted.

Mods, happy to remove if this isn’t the right sub for this — mainly wanted to share the awareness angle.

PSA for anyone in Mumbai researching cancer supportive-care options — there’s more local research happening than people realize

Saw a few threads here before about people looking for oncologists/second opinions in Mumbai, so thought I’d share something adjacent.

Most Ayurvedic wellness products in India don’t have any clinical documentation behind them — they’re sold on tradition alone, which makes it hard for patients/families to evaluate. There’s actually a CTRI-registered human clinical trial (India’s official clinical trials registry) that was conducted at a state Ayurvedic medical college in Kolkata on a supportive-care formulation, which is unusual for this category.

Full disclosure: I work with the company behind it (Health Reactive, based in Andheri West). Not selling anything here — just think it’s a useful data point for anyone whose family is looking into complementary/supportive options alongside actual oncology treatment (never instead of). Happy to share more if useful.
