Episode 4 — The Secret Behind His Smile.

It had been weeks since I started stopping by Papa Tunde’s stand every morning. What began as a random encounter had quietly become a ritual — a peaceful pause before the chaos of my day.

Some days we talked about nothing important — the weather, the stubbornness of Lagos traffic, the sweetness of the season’s corn. Other days, he dropped words that sank deep into my heart — small truths wrapped in laughter.

But there was one thing that never changed: his smile. No matter how hot the sun was or how slow business went, he always smiled. It puzzled me.

That morning, I decided to ask.

When I arrived, Papa Tunde was already there, humming softly as he fanned his fire. The smell of roasted corn mixed with the earthy scent of dawn. I greeted him and sat down, watching him work in silence.

“Papa,” I began gently, “you’re always smiling. Always happy. How do you do it?”

He paused, looked at me for a moment, and smiled — that same kind, peaceful smile that never seemed to fade.

“Ah, Treasure ,” he said slowly, “people think smiling means a man has no pain. But sometimes, it’s the only way he can survive it.”

I frowned, not sure what he meant. He continued, turning a corn slowly in the fire. “I was not always like this. Once, I had everything — a small shop, a wife who laughed like morning light, two strong sons. Life was sweet. But you know, when life changes, it doesn’t knock on the door first.”

His voice grew softer. “My wife fell sick — very suddenly. We tried everything, but in three months, she was gone. Then one of my sons… he left home after that. Couldn’t bear the sadness. The other went to find work in another city. For years, it was just me, the fire, and silence.”

My chest tightened. I whispered, “Papa, I’m so sorry.”

He nodded slowly. “I spent many mornings crying, asking God why. But one day, I saw a little girl walking by my stand. She was crying, maybe her mother scolded her. I smiled at her — just like that — and she smiled back through her tears. That small thing lit something inside me. I realized I could still give light, even when I had lost mine.”

He turned to me, eyes glistening but still bright.

“Since that day, I decided — if pain couldn’t kill me, it would teach me to love deeper. My smile is not because everything is fine, my daughter. It’s because I have survived everything that tried to break me.”

I felt a lump in my throat. The fire crackled quietly between us. I had come to admire his calm, but now I understood the strength behind it.

I said softly, “You remind me that happiness isn’t about having everything, but appreciating what’s left.”

He laughed gently. “You are learning fast, Treasure . That is good. Life will still test you — but never forget, the fire that burns you can also shape you.”

We sat together in silence for a while, listening to the crackle of the fire and the quiet hum of the city waking up. The world felt slower, almost sacred.

As I got up to leave, he handed me a fresh corn and said, “For your soul, not your stomach.”

I smiled, blinking back tears. “Thank you, Papa.”

On the drive to work, I kept replaying his words — ‘I have survived everything that tried to break me.’

For the first time in a long while, I realized that strength isn’t always loud or proud. Sometimes it’s quiet, humble, and smiling behind tears.
