Why Historical Fiction Helps Us Understand History Better Than Textbooks

History books tell us what happened. Historical fiction helps us understand what it felt like. When we read about wars, persecution, or great acts of courage, we often remember the dates but forget the people. A novel allows us to walk beside them, hear their fears, and experience their hopes. As an author of historical fiction, I spend months researching real events before writing a single chapter. My novels are inspired by true stories, but they are not biographies. Fiction allows history to breathe. Whether the story takes place during the Holocaust, in medieval Sicily, or in modern Italy, my goal is always the same: to make readers feel that they are living the events rather than simply reading about them. Many readers have told me that after finishing one of my novels they began searching for the real history behind it. That, to me, is the greatest compliment an author can receive. Historical fiction does not replace history. It inspires us to discover it. Uri J.
