The Simpsons Living Room — Immersive 3D Environment

Reimagining an iconic pop-culture set as a 3D interactive scene inside Unity.

Project Date: Fall 2025. Course: NMIX 4040 / 6040 — Immersive Realities. Role: Solo Project.

Project Overview

For my final project in Immersive Realities, I recreated the living room from The Simpsons as a fully modeled, animated, and interactive 3D environment in Unity. The goal was to explore the complete 3D production pipeline, modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, and scene composition, while bringing to life one of the most recognizable spaces in television history.

Tools Used: Blender • Unity • Mixamo / External rigs • Google Images (references) Scope: Individual project. I was responsible for every stage, from concept research and modeling to animation and final scene assembly.

The Problem

I wanted to create an immersive environment that felt meaningful, visually iconic, and achievable within the semester’s timeline. My first idea was the living room from Pixar’s Up, but the level of detail was too high for my current technical ability and the project constraints.

The Simpsons’ living room, however, offered the perfect balance:

  • A globally recognizable TV set.
  • A simple, stylized aesthetic ideal for low-poly 3D.
  • A deep personal connection.

Growing up, my dad was a huge Simpsons fan. He collected their figures, books, and merch, and we shared the show together. Years later, we visited the Simpsons area at Universal Studios and took these photos , happy like a kid meeting characters he’d known for decades.

These moments made the project more than a classroom exercise. It became a tribute to nostalgia, childhood, and how creativity connects generations.

The Solution (Process)

1. Research & Concept Development

I began by collecting reference screenshots of the living room from different episodes. I analyzed:

  • Layout and camera angles.
  • Color palette.
  • Lighting mood.
  • Object proportions.

Design goal: recreate the warm, flat, cartoon feel while giving the environment depth and dimensionality in 3D.

2. 3D Modeling in Blender

I modeled all core assets of the scene:

  • Couch.
  • TV.
  • Rug.
  • Frames and paintings.
  • Lamp.
  • Side table.
  • Shelves and wall décor.

To stay faithful to the cartoon aesthetic, I used:

  • Low-poly geometry.
  • Smooth shading.
  • Solid, saturated colors.
  • Minimal textures.

Small props were created directly in Unity for performance and speed.

3. Character Rigging & Animation

Although the environment was fully modeled by me, I imported static models of Homer and Bart to populate the scene. To animate Bart, I built a working humanoid rig in Blender.

Rigging Process

  • Created a humanoid armature.
  • Aligned bones manually.
  • Applied automatic weight painting.
  • Applied all transforms (Ctrl + A).
  • Exported as FBX ensuring correct armature settings.

Technical Issue

After importing into Unity and setting the rig to Humanoid, Unity wouldn’t allow manual keyframe animation on the model.

Solution

I adapted a pre-made dancing animation to the rig and integrated it into the scene. This turned into a fun focal point of the environment.

4. Environment Assembly & Lighting in Unity

Inside Unity, I:

  • Imported all assets.
  • Set up materials.
  • Positioned objects to match the original layout.
  • Adjusted perspective and scale for visual authenticity.

Lighting Setup

  • Directional Light to emulate daylight.
  • Point Lights near the lamp and key furniture.
  • Soft shadows to maintain warmth.
  • Light falloff tuned to match the cartoon aesthetic.

5. Final Render / Gameplay View

The final environment successfully captures the color, charm, and composition of the original TV scene, now with 3D depth and animated character motion. Bart’s dance adds humor and anchors the space as lively and nostalgic.

Results

This project strengthened my technical and creative abilities, especially in:

  • Blender → Unity pipeline integration.
  • Character rigging and animation troubleshooting.
  • Lighting design for stylized worlds.
  • Scene optimization and performance.
  • Visual storytelling in interactive environments

Beyond the technical gains, this project reminded me how digital spaces can preserve memory, nostalgia, and emotion.

Next Steps

Moving forward, I plan to:

  • Improve shadows and global illumination with baked lighting
  • Add interaction (turn TV on/off, sit on couch, click objects)
  • Create a VR-ready version
  • Expand the world into a larger Springfield Hub (Kwik-E-Mart, Simpsons kitchen, school)
