Why do we understand a failing body but judge a failing mind?

I recently came across a statement that people who take their own lives deserve judgment. It is a belief that many people repeat and defend. But hearing it made me wonder about something deeper. If we accept that a person can lose a battle with a physical illness, why is it so difficult for us to understand that a person can also lose a battle with mental and emotional suffering?

What is the difference? Aren't both in pain? Aren't both suffering? One's body failed them, while the other's mind did. We often show kindness and understanding when someone dies because their body could no longer continue. Yet when a person reaches the limits of what their mind can carry, they are often met with judgment instead of compassion. If both have suffered deeply, why is one treated differently from the other?

Many people judge mental suffering because they cannot see it. Physical illness is often visible, but emotional pain is usually hidden. Because it is hidden, some assume it is not as serious. They see the outcome but not the struggle that came before it. They do not see the weight a person carried every day or how long they fought to keep going.

Why is physical suffering met with compassion, but mental suffering is met with judgment? Why do we comfort those who die from sickness, but condemn those who die from emotional and psychological torment? Isn't pain still pain? Doesn't God see the heart of both? If we truly value compassion, then it should not depend on whether suffering comes from the body or the mind. Both deserve understanding, and both deserve mercy.
