Who will water the plants, when we travel? This hack still works 5 years later!

Every summer, when school breaks arrive and we start planning a family trip, the same question pops up before we’ve even booked the tickets: “What about the plants?” We have over 20 plants on our balcony — flowering plants, herbs, a few vegetables — and leaving them for 10 days in Indian summer heat is basically a death sentence without a plan.

I faced this exact problem years ago when work travel was pulling me 600+ km away from home regularly, and neighbours could only help so many times before it felt like an imposition. So I built something. A simple, automated drip watering system that I could control from my phone — from anywhere. That was 5 years ago. Today, packing for our family vacation, I checked the app on my phone and all readings were green. The system is still running. Still ever-green.

The build is simpler than it sounds. Here’s what I used and you can grab it all online (~Rs 2500) and have it running over a weekend:

• 🔧 Submersible pump — pulls water and pushes it through the drip lines
• 🪣 Storage drum — acts as a water reservoir (great if your tap isn’t nearby); alternatively, use a solenoid valve for a direct tap connection
• 💧 20-plant drip watering kit — individual nozzles for each pot; just lay the tubing and push them into the soil
• 📱 WiFi smart switch — connects to your home network, works with Alexa or Google Home; set a daily schedule or trigger it manually from your phone from anywhere (even from an aeroplane)

No coding. No electronics expertise. Just tubing, a pump, and a smart plug — and you’re done.

Five years, multiple Indian summers, monsoon seasons, and one global pandemic later — the plants are thriving and the system has needed almost zero intervention. The only thing I’ve replaced is the drip nozzles once (they clog over time; a quick rinse and they’re good as new). The pump is original. The smart switch still syncs on the first try.

What I didn’t expect when I built this was how much peace of mind it would give me — not just for travel, but for those crazy weeks where I just forget to water. If you have a garden you love and a life that doesn’t always let you show up for it, this is the weekend project that pays you back for years. We’re 10 days away from our family trip, and for the first time, plants aren’t on my worry list.
