The Death of 160: Has T20 Sacrificed Bowling for Spectacle?

When 180 Was the Sweet Spot

Up until around 2022, T20 cricket’s sweet spot was 160 to 180. A score of 175 felt competitive. Even a modest 130 all out could turn into a thriller during the chase.

But that balance is shifting.

In the early T20 era between 2007 and 2012, the average first innings score in men’s T20 internationals hovered around 150 to 160. By 2023 and 2024, that number had climbed close to 170 to 175 globally. In several major leagues, the average first innings total has crossed 180 in recent seasons.

The number of 200 plus scores tells the real story. In the first five years of franchise T20 leagues worldwide, 200 was rare. In the last three years alone, 200 plus totals have multiplied rapidly across international and league cricket. During the 2024 T20 World Cup, 200 was no longer a surprise, it was often just par.

Has T20 Killed Bowling?

As they say now, T20 has killed bowling.

Batters swing harder and more frequently than ever. Boundary percentage has increased significantly over the last decade. In many recent tournaments, over 55 percent of total runs have come in boundaries. Strike rates that were once considered explosive at 140 are now average for top order players.

Pitch preparation reflects this trend. Flat surfaces with minimal assistance for bowlers are increasingly common. Bowlers who rely purely on pitch movement struggle, while only those with exceptional variations survive. Average economy rates in T20 internationals have steadily risen compared to the early 2010s, particularly in death overs.

The result is a normalization of 200. What was once a match winning total is now chaseable.

The Commercial Incentive Behind Six Hitting

The commercial incentives are clear. The more times the ball clears the boundary, the more engaging the broadcast becomes. Many leagues even award prizes for most sixes in a season. Higher scoring games attract larger audiences, stronger sponsorships, and more advertising revenue.

Higher scoring equals more entertainment. More entertainment equals more money.

The Franchise Effect on Player Identity

This shift has also influenced player priorities. Several players from the West Indies, historically known for explosive power hitting such as Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Nicholas Pooran, and Shimron Hetmyer, have built careers around franchise cricket. The global T20 ecosystem rewards power more consistently than traditional formats.

For some players, leagues now offer more financial security than international cricket. Power hitting is marketable. Sixes build reputations faster than defensive technique.

Evolution or Imbalance?

The question is no longer whether T20 has evolved. It clearly has. The deeper question is this: Has T20 sacrificed competitive balance for spectacle?
