William Lim S.E., M.Fin: The Screens Are Dark: Observations from a Closed Market

Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

There is a profound silence in my home office today. The multiple monitors that usually stream real-time data from the Jakarta Stock Exchange are powered off. Indonesia is in the midst of the Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) extended holiday, and the financial markets are officially closed.

To anyone celebrating, I wish you a peaceful and blessed Eid. Mohon Maaf Lahir dan Batin.

Seeing the Forest, Not the Trees

As a private investor, the routine of analyzing macroeconomic data, tracking foreign flows, and managing risk can become all-consuming. We spend so much time looking at the abstract representation of the economy — the charts, the tickers, the percentages — that we sometimes lose sight of the physical reality behind them.

Days like today are the perfect antidote to that tunnel vision.

For the past several weeks, my notes have heavily focused on the “pre-holiday consumer cycle.” I positioned my portfolio defensively against global central bank noise, while anchoring it to the domestic demand I knew was coming. Today, I don’t need to look at a government retail sales report to know the thesis was correct. I can simply look out the window.

The massive exodus of people traveling back to their hometowns (Mudik), the crowded retail centers, and the sheer volume of goods moving across the archipelago — this is the real economy in motion. This is the cash flow that ultimately dictates the fundamental value of the consumer staples and logistics companies sitting in our portfolios.

The Value of Stillness

In the modern financial ecosystem, we are conditioned to believe that we must always be executing a trade to be productive. But true capital preservation often happens in the stillness.

When the market finally reopens, we will immediately be thrust into the final sprint of the first quarter. Portfolio managers will engage in their quarterly “window dressing,” and the volatility will return.

But until that opening bell rings, my strategy is simple: observe the real world, disconnect from the digital one, and allow my mental capital to compound. The market will be there when we get back.
