Living conditions of the homeless do not fulfill the bare minimum standards

Hello and welcome to Someday News Channel. I am Akshatha Sonal.

Karnataka has close to 3 lakh homeless people in urban areas. Some of them put up temporary tents in vacant plots and they stay in one place until the plot owners or authorities force them out.

I am in Kengeri, Bengaluru, and behind me, you can see tents on either side of the road. The people who stay on the right side are from Haveri, and those who stay on the left are from Andhra. They say they have taken permission from the landowners to set up their tents.

They have been living here for the past year without a water supply or electricity. They have to get water for daily use from construction sites or go in search of public taps. They don’t have gas cylinders so they have to collect wood from nearby areas. They don’t have any drainage system, and they defecate in the open.

It has been raining regularly in Bengaluru and the weather forecast shows that the rains will continue for the next few days. The people living here are positive that their tents will not leak. Their only concern is having to deal with the menace of rats.
