A Friendship Day Reflection

Some friendships begin with a handshake.

Some begin with a shared classroom.

Some simply become part of your life so quietly that, years later, you cannot remember when they actually began.

My friendship with Subodh belongs to the third kind.

Over the years, people have appreciated my books, my workshops, my professional journey, and my leadership reflections.

What many do not see is that behind every visible journey, there are people who quietly hold your hand without ever asking to be seen.

Subodh is one of those people.

He has celebrated my successes.

More importantly, he has stood beside me during my failures.

He has never hesitated to question my decisions.

He has disagreed with me when everyone else agreed.

He has criticised my ideas — not to discourage me, but to make them better.

That is a rare gift.

Many people support us when we succeed.

Very few care enough to tell us when we are wrong.

Looking back, I realise that some of my best decisions were influenced by conversations with him.

Not because he always had the answers.

But because he always cared enough to ask the difficult questions.

Friendship is often described as sharing happiness.

I believe true friendship is something deeper.

It is having someone who quietly reminds you who you are when life tries to convince you otherwise.

Someone who expects nothing in return.

No recognition.

No applause.

No obligation.

Just your wellbeing.

Today, on Friendship Day, I want to say —

Thank you, Subodh.

For your honesty.

For your patience.

For your criticism.

For your encouragement.

For standing beside me through every season of life.

People often say we are fortunate to have good friends.

I think the greater responsibility is becoming the kind of friend who deserves one.

As I reflect beneath my own metaphorical neem tree, I realise something beautiful.

Achievements may become memories.

Positions may become history.

Books may find readers.

But a true friend remains part of your story.

Happy Friendship Day to everyone fortunate enough to have such a friend.
