A Direct Challenge to Putin arrives amid Growing Russian Losses and Battlefield uncertainty

Russia’s war faces new tests as Ukraine combines military pressure with peace demands

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an open letter to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on Thursday, June 4.

The full text of the letter has been published on the website of the Office of the President of Ukraine.

If this open letter is seen only as a diplomatic message, it would be difficult to understand its importance.

The most important message of the letter is that Zelenskyy is trying to present the war at a point where Russia's path to victory looks much more difficult than before.

In this letter, the Ukrainian leader reminds that Russia is suffering heavy losses on the front (63% killed and 37% wounded), and is repeatedly delaying the date of capturing the Donetsk region.

Russian residents continue to grow increasingly unhappy about the constant missile and drone strikes from Ukraine; they can no longer find gasoline; additional sanctions have been placed against them by the West; and Russia is planning a second round of mobilization (compulsory drafting into military service).

He further stated that Ukraine has successfully carried the conflict across the border into Russian territory, and now Russia is totally reliant upon China.

He argues that the longer Russia continues the war, the higher the economic, social, and military price it will have to pay.

When he writes “do not be afraid to get out of the war”, it is actually a psychological message. Its purpose is to tell Putin that ending the war is not a sign of weakness, but can be a possible political option.

In the second part of the letter, Zelenskyy writes that, according to intelligence information, Russia is considering plans up to 2027–2028 and wants to increase its activities in areas like Belarus and Transnistria.

The sharpest part of the letter is where Zelenskyy reminds Putin of Russia’s history.

Russian history is a witness that whenever the Russian people or army get tired and fed up with wars, a coup or revolution happens inside the country (like the 1917 revolution) and the ruler has to leave the throne.

Zelenskyy has asked Putin for a direct “bilateral meeting” by fixing a specific date, instead of mediation by a third country, so that the war can be ended forever.

Ukraine has proposed two main steps for peace: during the talks, a complete ceasefire from both sides, and “all for all” — meaning all Ukrainian soldiers in Russian captivity and all Russian soldiers in Ukrainian captivity should be released together.

I do not think that this will have any effect on Putin, his supporters, and hardline Russian people. On the contrary, the Russian people will now see this peace proposal as Ukraine’s ‘weakness’ or ‘begging for mercy’.

They will think, “Since Ukraine is tired and is falling to its knees, Russia should intensify its attacks even more.”

Instead of calming Russia, this letter from Zelenskyy will further provoke Russian hardliners (and prove destructive), because they will take the wrong meaning from it.

Another point is that Zelenskyy himself knows very well what reply will come to this letter. Maybe there is a planned strategy behind this letter.

It seems Ukraine wants to put itself in a position where it can say: ‘We are ready to talk, but if the war goes on, we will keep fighting too.’

Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has accepted that the letter has reached them and they have read it.

After this, he said that if Zelenskyy truly wants to meet, he can come to Moscow. At first glance, this might seem like a normal invitation, but in reality, things are not that simple.

The result is that we’ve now arrived at a juncture in this conflict where ministerial/official discussions will not resolve anything; only the Presidents of each nation can do so through direct, one-on-one face time.

Crimea

Late night on June 3 and after midnight, sounds of explosions and active air defense operations were heard in various parts of occupied Crimea.

Around midnight, a UAV (drone) attack took place on a military unit of the Russian armed forces in the center of Simferopol.

In addition, a series of explosions and activity of Russian air defense were heard near the military airfields of “Kacha”, “Saki”, “Belbek”, and near the “Gvardeiskoye” airport.

Due to a large number of drone attacks by Ukraine on the temporarily occupied Crimean Peninsula during the evening hours of June 4, Russian authorities closed the Crimean Bridge.

Russia’s Crimean Bridge (also known as the Kerch Bridge) is Russia’s primary transportation route into Crimea.

The majority of weapons, supplies (fuel and logistics) sent from Russia to support its military are transported across the Crimean Bridge.

Russian officials claimed that their air defense systems shot down many Ukrainian drones in the air, but several explosions in Kerch and Simferopol indicate that some drones successfully hit their targets.

On June 3 itself, an explosion occurred at a weapons production facility in Tula, Russia, which caused a fire and resulted in loss of lives.

The city of Tula is very famous in Russian history for its weapons factories (Weapons Industry).

During wartime, the pressure of work on such cities and factories becomes very high because the army constantly needs ammunition.

Russian state media often avoids using the direct word ‘explosion’ for big bomb blasts or explosions and calls it lightly “pop” (Хлопок — khlopok) to downplay it.

But according to eyewitnesses, the blast was so big that the roof of the building flew off.

Russia is already struggling with a severe shortage of weapons and ammunition due to the Ukraine war (as also indicated in Zelenskyy’s letter).

At such a time, the destruction of an active weapons factory inside Russia and the killing of skilled workers (3 deaths) is a major loss for the Russian army, whether it was an accident or a secret attack (sabotage).

Before the cold months begin in late November 2026, Ukraine would like to secure a ceasefire with Russia.

The reasons why they want this ceasefire are that in the cold weather, Russia bombs Ukrainian civilian energy production, electrical grids and heat distribution. When these things get destroyed, it is difficult for people to live.

Ukraine has stopped Russia from advancing on the battlefield, but it is on the verge of running out of Patriot missile interceptors to stop the Russian missiles raining from the sky.

This is why Zelenskyy has written a personal letter to US President Donald Trump urging him to send missiles immediately.

America is currently entangled in its own military tension with Iran, due to which its attention has shifted a bit from Ukraine.

But there are elections in America in November, and keeping this situation in mind, recently Rubio has given good news for Ukraine regarding American weapons.

The United States (US) will soon announce the allocation of a new military aid package worth 400 million dollars for Ukraine. According to a Reuters report, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed a Senate subcommittee about it.

This is not a new loan or separately passed money. It was part of the US government’s defense budget from December 2025.

In the past few months, American lawmakers (senators) have expressed anger at the Department of Defense (Pentagon) for sitting on the files at this critical stage of the war.

After this political pressure, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had to “unblock” this fund.

American aid is of two types: one in which the US military directly gives weapons from its old stock to Ukraine.

The second is the USAI program, under which the US government gives money to its own domestic weapons manufacturing companies (such as Lockheed Martin or Raytheon) so that they can make completely new weapons and missiles for Ukraine. These 400 million dollars are for this new production.

As you read above, Ukraine’s ‘Patriot’ system cartridges (interceptors) are running out to stop Russian ballistic missiles.

This unblocked 400 million dollars will help American companies make the needed missiles and military gear for Ukraine much faster.

This will let Ukraine make its air defense stronger before winter comes. But no one has revealed yet which weapons are part of this package.

In an interview published on 3 June, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar told the German media ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine’ that Hungary can host peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

Hungary’s former Prime Minister Viktor Orban was openly considered a supporter of Putin, due to which the European Union (EU) remained unhappy.

But the new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, has a different stance. He is pro-Europe and tough on Russia.

Magyar knows that Hungary is a small country, so it cannot decide between Russia and Ukraine (this work will be done only by superpowers like America and China). But Hungary can provide a safe place and diplomatic environment for both sides to sit down.

Magyar recalled the 1994 ‘Budapest Memorandum’ and said that if there is a peace agreement this time, it should not be just on paper or like empty slogans.

Ukraine should get such “solid international guarantees” that if Russia attacks again in the future, the armies of the entire world will come forward to defend Ukraine.

As far as I believe, just starting talks will not achieve anything. For any permanent agreement, such security guarantees will be needed that Ukraine can actually trust, and Zelenskyy also understands this very well.
