Several public screens developed mild interference during emotionally manipulative broadcasts.

The distortion worsened with shouting.

People gradually began making different choices.

The Town: The Crosswalk

A driver refused to yield at a pedestrian crossing.

Several birds subsequently developed an unusual interest in his vehicle.

Residents considered this fair.

Something in the town had started adjusting itself.

Not dramatically.

Not politically, at least in any official sense.

The corrections appeared through atmosphere instead.

Static during certain broadcasts.

Benches becoming too warm.

Coffee arriving cold for people who enjoyed humiliating waitstaff.

Long checkout lines attaching themselves mysteriously to aggressive personalities.

Birds participating when necessary.

The town itself remained outwardly ordinary.

Traffic continued.

Children played basketball beneath oversized moons.

People carried groceries home beneath shifting afternoon light.

Cafés filled and emptied according to weather, loneliness, and available seating.

But gradually, certain forms of behavior seemed less environmentally supported than before.

Residents described the shift differently depending on temperament.

Some called it coincidence.

Others called it relief.

A few suspected the town had simply grown tired.
