The Heuristics Evaluation

The UI Heuristics principles are a set of 10 broad guidelines, that are largely based on Jakob Nielsen’s work, that help ensure a product’s user interface is intuitive, effective, and satisfying. These principles cover certain things like keeping users informed, using familiar language, giving users control, maintaining consistency, etc. A heuristic evaluation is done to determine whether the application is suitable for the user’s needs or not. A brief explanation of what a heuristic evaluation is, it is a usability inspection method where UX experts assess a product’s UI against a set of established usability principles called heuristics.

Suppose you take Amazon’s application, it has practically everything, from A to Z with a smile. However, if you look closely at the UI structure of the app you see that it excels in many areas like visibility of system status and user control and freedom, match between system and the real world, and consistency and standards.

There also many places where they are constantly improving the app in terms of user control and freedom, search results page design, visibility of system status, and a more value — driven navigation. Overall, Amazon is a leader in e-commerce usability and incorporate many of Nielsen’s heuristics effectively. Continuous evaluations and user feedback are essential for Amazon to maintain its status as a user-friendly platform and continue enhancing the user experience.

Taking another example, say Duolingo. This app does not follow all the heuristic principles, though it may align with many and is known to be “user-friendly”, the heuristic evaluations have identified violations in principles like visibility of system status, flexibility and efficiency of use, and aesthetic and minimalistic design.

Lack of flexibility and efficiency of use

When it comes to flexibility and efficiency of use, there’s one thing that I have noticed is that Duolingo does not have a easier method to select languages, one has to scroll down to choose their language of choice. There many principles that Duolingo does align with, some of them are, match between the system and the real world, user control and freedom, recognition rather than recall, help and documentation, provide feedback, and many more.

However, there is no app that flawlessly adheres to every principle, as their applications sometimes depend on the design choices made during development, through heuristic evaluation is a recommended method to assess usability. While the 10 heuristic principles are widely recognized and provide a strong foundation for user-friendly design, they aren’t always followed, especially if they conflict with specific business or user needs for a particular product. Heuristic evaluation can also be complemented with other user research methods to gain deeper insights into local or contextual user experiences.
