What if the origins of the modern monetary system can be traced back to a simple service: safeguarding gold?

Centuries before central banks existed, goldsmiths provided secure storage for precious metals and issued receipts to depositors. Over time, those receipts became widely accepted, laying the foundation for banknotes, credit creation, government bond markets, and eventually the modern financial system.

To better understand this evolution, I built the Goldsmith Simulator – an interactive tool that follows the journey from gold storage to modern money.

The simulation explores how trust, credit, and financial innovation transformed the way money works and how financial systems evolved over time.

The history of money is not just a story about gold or paper. It is a story about confidence, institutions, and the development of increasingly complex financial relationships that continue to influence markets today.
