A letter to Sonny
Sonny,
A letter to Sonny
Sonny,
From where should I even start? It’s been almost 3 months since you left Tottenham Hotspur, your second home. Watching you play for one last time in a Spurs jersey was one of the hardest goodbyes for me.
Back in 2018, I became a football freak because of Hugo Lloris. A huge thanks to him; otherwise, I won’t be the Spurs fan I am today. I had zero idea about football matches, leagues, trophies, or players. But after becoming his fan, I gradually started learning all of these on my own.
At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, I remember the whole building of mine was shaking! Why? Because Germany lost to Korea! And a boy named “Heung Min Son” scored in the injury time! I had no idea what was happening. All I remember, a young boy crying, shaking! I did not even know you, but I really felt that you deserved every bit of it!

Son broke into tears after winning against Germany in 2018 WC
Because of Hugo, I started learning about a club named “Tottenham Hotspur.” Started watching Spurs matches. There I saw an Asian guy, guess who he was? Yes, Sonny!
On top of everything, I never saw such a humble person in my life! Bale was right when he said that you are the most humble person IN THE WORLD! No debate needed.

Everyone talks about you and Hugo’s dressing room fight. I still remember that scene! When that happened, I was literally so so stunned! Like, I am a huge admirer of both of you, and you guys are so calm! I was thinking, bro, what happened! But good to see that everything was alright after the match. That was an unexpected event for sure!
The Kane-Son duo? Ohmaigod! The BEST PL DUO ever! I can’t explain in words how privileged I was to see both of you play together! I still can see the scene where you asked Kane, “Did you get the assist, Harry?” Top-tier emotion!

BEST PL DUO
Your that solo goal against Aston Villa? Pure art! Still can remember I was on my sofa, cheering “Go Son dada gooooo”, And the whole stadium was celebrating with you! What a goal! And what a Puskas award as well, right?

The dedication you have for football is really unimaginable. You truly inspire me to stay focused on my goal while staying humble! I have seen the pain in your eyes after losing those finals. We all know what those finals mean to you. But one thing we all knew, good days will come. It is just a matter of time.
And 21st May, 2025 was THE day! Even thinking of that day gives me chills. What a day, what a day! As a Spurs fan, it will ALWAYS be a special night! From the minute one, I was crying. I was so scared to even imagine not winning this one. Those extra 7 minutes were the LONGEST 7 minutes of my life! When the final whistle blew, you kneeled down, everyone was running into the field, to the fans, it was all worth waiting all these years! I was sobbing! I could not believe what I just saw!

Ladies and gentlemen, Tottenham Hotspur for you.
After all these years, our captain Sonny lifted a major European trophy! The history was made! From fans to players, all were out of the world, but they were also happy to win it for YOU! For their captain! You so deserve it!

When the hardwork finally pays off!
From you, I learnt a few things:
-Finish what you have started.
-Be focused on your goal.
-Be disciplined
-Stay humble no matter what.
-Hard work and consistency over anything.
After that final, we got to see the parade! My first ever seeing a Tottenham Hotspur parade! It was on live and I watched the FULL live without any pause for 4+ hours straight! So many fans were there! It was legit like a sea of people. Totally enjoyed the bus scenes! Every Spurs player was having their BEST time!

EUROPA LEAGUE WINNER 2025
And we got to see our Sonny cursing before GTA6! To be very honest, I was not expecting that! Such an environment, isn’t it? Too good!

Such a VIBE!
We had 2 great weeks! The celebrations were ongoing. Then Ange got sacked on 6th June. We, the fans, took a pause. We were stunned! I know you were really close with Ange, and it hurt you. We were all heartbroken. It was a turning point.
Fast forward to 2nd August,2025, when you announced that you were leaving Tottenham in the pre-match press conference in Korea. I heard the rumours, but hearing from you was the toughest one to swallow. I felt numb, I felt so empty to realise that you are officially leaving.

On 3rd August, you played for Spurs for the last time in your home country against Newcastle in a club friendly match. I loved the way every player were trying to pass you the ball! And Johnson’s celebration? Wholesome! I saw the spark in your eyes that time!

And then, it was the time when the whistle blew for the sub. Loved the way every player on the pitch came to hug you, bless you! The guard of honour was emotional! You were smiling all the time, and then when you sat on the bench, it was the moment when goodbye hit you. Eyes were filled with water, flashbacks were coming from all these 10 years! 10 YEARS! The whole stadium was feeling the same way. My eyes were blurred, at one point, I found myself sobbing.

The scene from the post-match was so emotional! I never saw the whole team feeling in this way for a player! You earned that, Son dada! Every player was emotional to see their captain leave. Goodbyes never felt this way ever!
From the fans to the coaching staff to the cameramen, everyone was sad to see you leave Tottenham Hotspur. You are forever our Mr Tottenham!

The moment when all the Spurs fans cried.
As you said, “Spurs will forever be in your heart” You will always be our LEGEND! You came as a young boy with lots of dreams and left as a club legend!
A longtime player is bidding farewell to a club he has called home for an incredible 10 years! It’s a bittersweet moment filled with memories and milestones. What a journey it’s been! And the farewell message? Oh man-

I will be watching you in LAFC, and I know it won’t take you much time to build the legacy there as well! Good to see my favourite two lining up again!

HUGO X SON
I had the dream to see you play in a Spurs jersey, but it did not happen. Never say never, right? Never a goodbye, but a see you soon!
Thank you so much for everything, Captain! If you see carefully, I called you Son Dada. In Bangla, dada means “Big brother”. Thanks for guiding me without even knowing!
With best regards,
Progya (A die hard Spurs fan)
