There was nothing left to do with the past but to delete every instance of the things that I thought were important enough to be remembered.

It was simple: pick and choose which of our memories to keep, which stories were worthy of the kindness to remain. To sit with, parse through, and throw out all that

history. Artifacts of days now so distant. All the day- -s where we looked happy; when we thought that things would never change, thought that it

would never end. It wasn’t easy: discarding it all from memory. There was no proof, no way of knowing any of it happened by the end; the evidence no longer existed. But I know we’ll still remember. Because it mattered. Still, it mattered.
