Error-Free Setup of Scroll View and Stack View in iOS

Using scroll views can present some challenges, especially when combined with stack views; this guide will help you navigate them smoothly and maintain a consistent layout.

1. Configuring the Scroll View

Start by placing a scroll view inside the view controller and giving it constraints as 0–0–0–0 to the safe area. This provides that the scroll view fills the view controller scene completely, independently from the device screen size both the width and height.

  • Add Scroll View: Set all its constraints (top, bottom, leading and trailing) to 0.

2. Adding and Configuring the Stack View

To accurately set and adjust the content of the scroll view’s content, using a stack view is the effective option. This will provide the efficient alignment and spacing of the views inside this view.

  • Add Stack View: Arrange the alignment of the stack view inside the scroll view as vertical in order to provide the top to bottom subviews arrangement.
  • Set Constraints: Set 0–0–0–0 constraints to the Scroll view’s own top, bottom, leading and trailing; instead of setting the alignment to the content layout guide. This provides free containment inside the bounds of scroll view.

  • Equal Widths Constraint: Arrange an equal width constraint among the stack view and the scroll view so that the unexpected horizontal scrolling will be prohibited. It can be done by holding the “ctrl” key and dragging the mouse from one of these elements to the other one.

3. Using Fixed-Height Views Inside the Stack View

Subviews of the stack view must have fixed heights in order to prevent the errors occuring by the stack view not being able to calculate its own height.

  • Add Fixed-Height Views: Inside the stack view, place at least one view which has a static height constraint. It will allow the stack view to determine a constraint for its height. Also constraints as 0–0 leading and trailing can be used at this point in order to solve a possible “add missing constraints” error for the stack view and the scroll view.

  • Duplicate as Needed: After the fixed-height included view or views has been added inside the stack view, they can be duplicated easily by using “command+d” or many other ui elements can be added inside the stack view.

Key Tips:

  • Stack View as Child: The first (maybe ideally the only one) ui element must be the stack view for an efficient and smooth user experience through the layout.
  • Views with static heights: They will provide the stack view’s ability to calculate an ideal height for itself.

By following the denoted stages, the solid scroll and stack view arrangements will be provided accurately without any ui layout arrangement errors.
