Dawn Records (UK) Story and Album Discography
Dawn was started by the Pye label brass in 1969 as a vehicle for recordings made in what is known as the progressive rock genre. There were such labels out from other labels at the time. EMI had Harvest, Philips had Vertigo, [UK] Decca had Deram. Even the British divisions of US labels had prog-rock units: CBS [US Columbia] had Direction while its rival RCA Victor had Neon.
Dawn had recorded rock music in the forms of folk, hard, classic, pop, soft and art. It also recorded jazz and avantgarde music. It initially released EPs that unusually played at 33 RPM, but that novelty was abandoned quickly in favor of the more general LP/45 direction.

The only consistent hitmakers for Dawn came in the form of Mungo Jerry, with singer Ray Dorset in the command of one of those ever-changing line-ups of band members. The group specialized in a sound that, while contemporary, was also a throwback to the old skiffle days. Their first single, “In the Summertime”, was among many out-of-the-box hits of the summer of 1970, hitting #1 on many worldwide charts, and #3 in the USA. The group had other major hits on Dawn too, such as “Baby Jump”, “Lady Rose”, “You Don’t Have to Be in the Army to Fight in the War”, “Open Up”, “Alright, Alright, Alright”, “Wild Love”, and last but not least, the top-20 “Long Legged Woman Dressed in Black”. They would flee for Polydor after Dawn was shuttered.
Another act Dawn had was a folk-rock group called Prelude. This group was Brian Hume (vocals, guitar), his wife Irene (vocals) and Ian Vardy (guitars, vocals). The group is mostly known for their a-capella version of Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush”, which hit #21 on the Singles Chart.
Fruupp was the third of Dawn’s acts, hailing from the Northern Irish town of Belfast. They never had a hit recording but were very popular with college students and as supporting acts; they opened for Genesis, Queen, and King Crimson.
So those were the only three notable acts on Dawn. It was not for lack of talent either. It released Donovan’s early 1970s efforts, Open Road and HMS Donovan. Atomic Rooster came from B&C and was an offshoot of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. And then, there was David McWilliams; on Major Minor, he had a hit in 1967 with “Days of Pearly Spencer”.
October 1970 saw the New Musical Express reporting that Demon Fuzz, Titus Groan, Heron and Comus, all Dawn artists, were due to take part in several UK concerts in November for one penny for the price of admission. Those concerts did the label no favours either.
In 1975, Pye decided to close down Dawn, one of several prog-rock labels to be closed by their (founding) proprietor by this time. The timing was great! Dawn had signed Brotherhood of Man after Deram was shuttered by UK Decca, and that group prepared itself for a string of hits (and a Eurovision winner) for Pye. When Pye exited the US market (again) the resulting label, Prelude, was to be renamed in said group’s honour.
The first label used on Dawn LPs was alternatively orange and red with black print with a drawing of the sun in a film strip at the top:

The second label was a variation of the semi-circle-split label Pye was using but it was on a lavender background and the semi-circle was not coloured in:

In the fall of 1973, this was replaced with a multi-coloured label with a picture of the sun at the top and some blue waves toward the bottom. The copyright warning font varied between its two versions, as seen below this text:

The company is unrelated to the American label of that name, which was a jazz label that existed in the ‘50s.
