The Metro at 6 PM

At 6 PM, the metro is not a train.

It is a river.

Every station pours more people into it, and every person steps in carrying the remains of their day.

A woman clutches her laptop bag to her chest. Inside it are a charger, a notebook, and a meeting that could have been an email.

A young man in formal shoes keeps checking his phone. He has been awake since six in the morning and still has an hour left before he reaches home.

A student stands in the corner, earbuds in, revising notes between stations. Tomorrow’s exam is already sitting on his shoulders.

A labourer rests his hand on the metal pole. There is dust under his nails and cement on his shirt. He doesn’t know the language of presentations and deadlines, but he knows fatigue just as well.

At 6 PM, everyone is carrying something.

Some carry files. Some carry groceries. Some carry worries that have no weight and yet make their shoulders droop.

The metro knows none of their names.

But every evening, it memorises their faces.

It knows who gets off at the station with the expensive apartments and who travels till the very end because home lies on the city’s edge.

It knows who rushes out because someone is waiting and who lingers on the platform because no one is.

As the sun disappears behind buildings, the windows turn into mirrors.

And for a few seconds, people stop looking outside.

They look at themselves.

The person in the reflection is rarely the employee, the manager, the student, or the worker.

It is simply someone who woke up this morning with hope and is returning home with a little less energy and a few more thoughts.

The metro at 6 PM does not carry passengers.

It carries an entire city’s tiredness back to where it came from.
